    • Disclosed are methods and apparatus for automatically aligning the field of view of a two dimensional bar code reading device with a randomly oriented two-dimensional bar code symbol wherein the symbol comprises a unique pattern located contiguously on at least one side thereof. One method is implemented in a laser based embodiment by scanning the symbol with a laser scan line extending through the border pattern (which is a PDF417 start codeword), measuring the length of the start codeword detected by the scan line, and rotating the laser scan line by a predetermined amount. This is repeated for a predetermined number of times, and the rotation angle at which the codeword length is smallest is determined by performing a least squares fit of the measured codeword lengths and rotation angles. The raster pattern is then rotated to the determined rotation angle so as to be aligned with the symbol for subsequent scanning and decoding. In the alternative, a sequential least squares fit can be performed after each start codeword measurement is made rather than waiting for all measurements to be made. An alternative embodiment implements a discrete radial CCD array comprised of linear CCD arrays which enables angular scanning of the target symbol, wherein a two-dimensional CCD array is then rotated either physically or logically by the calculated skew angle in order to be aligned with the symbol for imaging and subsequent processing and decoding.

    • A portable vein viewer apparatus may be battery powered and hand-held to reveal patient vasculature information to aid in venipuncture processes. The apparatus comprises a first laser diode emitting infrared light, and a second laser diode emitting only visible wavelengths, wherein vasculature absorbs a portion of the infrared light causing reflection of a contrasted infrared image. A pair of silicon PIN photodiodes, responsive to the contrasted infrared image, causes transmission of a corresponding signal. The signal is processed through circuitry to amplify, sum, and filter the outputted signals, and with the use of an image processing algorithm, the contrasted image is projected onto the patient's skin surface using the second laser diode. Revealed information may comprise vein location, depth, diameter, and degree of certainty of vein locations. Projection of vein images may be a positive or a negative image. Venipuncture needles may be coated to provide visibility in projected images.

    • The present invention is directed to a two-dimensional scanning arrangement for a laser vein-illumination device that includes a base and a frame connected to the base using at least one flexible hinge. The hinge allows the frame to move angularly with respect to the base in a first direction. The invention further includes a means for exciting angular oscillations of the frame at or near said frame's resonant frequency. An elastic torsional element having a proximal end rigidly attached to said frame and a distal end rigidly attached to a mirror is also included. The torsional element allows the mirror to move angularly with respect to the frame in a second direction, generally perpendicular to the first direction. There may also be a means for exciting the angular oscillations of the mirror. The invention also includes a device for optically inspecting confined spaces having one or more small access orifices. The device includes at least one laser light source and a scanning means which scans one or more laser beam in a two-dimensional pattern over an inspection area. Also present is at least one light detector, sensitive to the light of the laser beam(s) being reflected from the inspection area. There is also a connecting member being thin and long enough to reach the inspection area through the access orifice.
