    • The present invention is directed to methods for improving the performance of an electrophoretic display by modifying the display cell surface. More specifically, the methods are directed to modification of the microcup surface after the microcups are released from the mold. The microcups which have undergone any of the treatment methods of the invention show significant improvement in their surface properties, such as chemical functionality, surface roughness, surface tension, morphology, surface charge, surface reflectivity, surface conductivity and optical properties, particularly optical density in the visible light region. An electrophoretic display formed from the treated microcups has many advantages. For example, the display shows a higher contrast ratio, lower electro-optic response time, lower driving voltage, longer shelf life, higher imageincreasing bistability and higher threshold voltage. In addition, it exhibits an improved image quality by reducing undesirable scum formation or irreversible particle deposition on the microcup surface.

    • Photothermally sensitive recording sheets for color imaging are disclosed comprising a transparent support sheet having a thermal slip layer disposed on one surface of the support and a heat sensitive image layer on the opposite surface of the support. A second opaque (paper) or transparent (plastic) sheet is laminated to the color-producing layer. The image layer comprises photohardenable microcapsules containing a photopolymerizable or photocrosslinkable compound, a photoinitiator and a dye precursor and a developer material external to the microcapsules. Image-wise exposure of the recording sheet to actinic radiation causes selective photohardening of microcapsules sensitive to that radiation. Heating the resultant exposed recording sheet to a temperature well above the developer melting point by for example a thermal head allows the developer to selectively permeate the non-photohardened capsules resulting in the development of an image, including full color images. The recording sheets are suitable for use in high speed printing applications such as computer print out paper, battery operated printers for digital camera or personal digital assistance, labels, medical imaging, and color proofing films.

    • This invention relates to the preparation of solvent soluble polymeric materials which become insoluble in solvents after exposure to actinic light, x-rays or electron beams.The polymers are linear block copolymers comprising two segments; a soft segment which forms a continuous phase, and a rigid, crystallizable photoreactive segment which forms a dispersed phase. The rigid segments are chosen from polyurethanes, polyesters, polyamides, and polyureas which contain a diacetylene group in their repeat units. The soft segments are low molecular weight rubbery polymers selected from groups such as polyethers, polyesters, polydienes, and polysiloxanes.The polymers produced are useful in a wide variety of applications in the field of coatings and graphic arts. More particularly, this invention relates to negative photoresists which are remarkable by their (1) high photosensitivity (2) great latitude in tailoring of film properties, (3) high thermal stability and (4) oxygen insensitivity.
