    • Oligomerization of 2-8C olefins in a sequence of \- 2 reaction zones is such that the volume of Ni-containing catalyst in each zone is set so that the difference between the temperature rises experienced by the feed in two zones is no more than 20 deg C. Oligomerization of 2-8C olefins comprises passing an olefin-containing hydrocarbon stream through a sequence of \- 2 adiabatically-operated reaction zones over a heterogeneous Ni-containing catalyst so that the stream experiences a temperature increase delta Treact in each zone and such that the stream enters the first zone at Tin and, prior to entering each subsequent zone, is cooled to Tin +/- 20 deg C. The relative catalyst volume in each zone is such that the difference in delta Treact between two zones is at most 20 deg C. An Independent claim is also included for a process comprising: (i) passing the olefin-containing hydrocarbon stream over a first zone over a heterogeneous Ni-containing catalyst; (ii) separating off the oligomers formed and dividing the hydrocarbon stream into two sub-streams (Ia) and (Ib); (iii) recycling sub-stream (Ia) to the first zone and passing (Ib) to a second zone containing the catalyst; (iv) separating off the oligomers from the product of the second zone and dividing the stream into sub-streams (IIa) and (IIb); and (v) recycling (IIa) to the second zone and taking (IIb) out of the process, the ratios (Ia)/(Ib) and (IIa)/(IIb) being such that the oligomer concentration in the reaction mixture does not exceed 30 wt.% in any zone.
