    • Transmission methods for multicast messages and for signaling message responses thereto in communication systems supporting a multicast mode provide that a number of retransmissions of a multicast message may be changed based on a number of receivers of the message. Signaling messages to the multicast message may be transmitted in response to a fixed number of multicast message transmissions, and receivers that have not received the multicast message after the fixed number of transmissions may request further retransmissions up to an additional given number of times. Further, signaling messages may be transmitted at different times or staggered based on a radio condition of the receivers. For example, a first multicast message may be transmitted, and responses from groups of receivers may be listened to for a given period, after which one of a next multicast message and a portion of the first multicast message may be transmitted to the groups.

    • Methods and apparatus for communicating transmission backlog information are described. Reporting control factors are utilized to expand reporting possibilities for a fixed bit size request report. At least one report control factor is determined as a function of channel quality information, power information, device capability information, and/or quality of service information. A transmission backlog report value is interpreted as a function of a reporting control factor. A wide range of quantization schemes for reporting transmission backlog information are facilitated corresponding to a small bit size report. A communications device can adaptively select a quantization request level closely matched to its current needs such as to provide an accurate representation of its current traffic channel resource needs. A communications device may request a number of frames in a request report and the same report may be indirectly requesting a number of communications segments needed to clear its transmission backlog.

    • A method of controlling link transmission parameters of a communication flow in a network caches one or more network parameters at the end of a first communication flow for an elapsed time, and adjusts the network parameters for controlling link quality and transmit power of a next communication flow based on an uncertainty that is caused by caching for the elapsed time. The state of a communication channel during a previous communication flow (connection) is used to determine network parameters to use at a future communication flow. When a connection begins, and the network does not know the ideal settings to use, the network defines a specified, elapsed time duration over which the state of a previous connection no longer can be trusted, i.e., an uncertainty period. Network parameters are adjusted to account for uncertainty caused by the elapsed time.
