This invention provides a method to promote growth of a plant by administration of formic acid, an organic acid with a low molecular weight through avoidance of photo-oxidation damage. This invention also provides amino acid sequence of formate dehydrogenase and base sequence encoding the enzyme. The expression of the enzyme is induced by administration of formic acid and the enzyme is involved in metabolism of formic acid and its salts. Furthermore, this invention provides a method to promote growth of a plant by administration of methanol through avoidance of photo-oxidation damage.

    • A method of manufacturing a spline shaft, comprising ironing a hollow stock by cold forging and forming splines in a desired portion of said hollow stock by cold forging by using its work harden state. This method makes it possible to reduce the weight of a product by using a hollow stock, and to prevent buckling of the material of the hollow stock during the formation of splines owing to work-hardening caused by the ironing. Further, a predetermined root strength can be ensured without requiring induction hardening. Accordingly, a reduction in weight is achieved, and the production speed and yield are improved.

    • A motion vector detection circuit includes a registration determining switch which sets a first registration determination mode wherein at an initial field, correlation values are evaluated by a correlator on the basis of integrated color data of a specific detection block being stored in a representative color memory and integrated color data of twenty-five (25) detection blocks being stored in an integrated color memory. In a second registration determination mode set by the registration determining switch, the correlator evaluates correlation values on the basis of the integrated color data of the specific detection block and integrated color data of four (4) detection block.

    • A fuel supply controller for an internal combustion engine includes an acceleration mode detector, an incremental fuel supply rate calculator, and a fuel supplier. The controller sets a smaller incremental fuel supply rate with increasing engine speed to prevent excessive fuel supply to the engine during acceleration. A fuel supply corrector, a correction inhibitor, and a correction inhibitor canceller are provided for improved acceleration performance regardless of the mode of acceleration. An acceleration mode discriminator and an incremental fuel rate supplier provide proper fuel control even with increasing acceleration. The controller can use first and second control maps for controlling fuel supply. A map discriminator provides for a smooth changeover between maps.

An operating condition discriminator determines the operating condition of the engine. An ignition timer controls ignition timing based on the pulses from the first and second pulse generators, and a fuel injection timer controls fuel injection based on the pulses from the first and third pulse generators.

    • A puffer type gas-blast circuit breaker provided with a movable electrode and a fixed electrode opposite the movable electrode, which electrodes are separable for implementing a circuit-breaking action, and a fixed current-carrying contact arranged around the periphery of the fixed electrode.
