    • A method and an apparatus for compressing a multiple resolution stereo and multi-view video are provided to be compatible with an existing video encoding/decoding apparatus for displaying a single visual point image, thereby supporting the display of the stereo and multi-view video efficiently. An apparatus for encoding and decoding a video comprises a basic visual point image(201). An extended visual point image(202), a video encoder for an existing visual point(210), a video decoder for the existing visual point(220), a filter a down sampler for reducing the space resolution of an image signal(212), an encoder for encoding the extended visual point image(230), a decoder for decoding the extended visual point image(240), and a restored image storage unit for reference in estimation and compensation between motion and time. The extended visual point image of which the resolution is reduced is encoded by filtering a left visual point image previously encoded, sampling the left visual point image in the same resolution, and using a reference image stored in the restored image storage unit.
