    • A concentrated substrate of whey solids is inoculated with a mixed dairy starter culture capable of converting lactose to lactic acid and a mixed yeast culture capable of utilizing lactose and/or lactic acid. Before inoculation the substrate is sterilized without denaturation of the whey protein. With nutritional additives as required to optimize bacteria and yeast growth, the inoculated substrate is subjected to a protracted fermentation by the combined fermentative actions of multiple bacteria and multiple yeast organisms while aerating the substrate. The aerated fermentation is continued past an intermediate stage, as indicated by the pH minimum, where most of the lactose has been utilized and the lactic acid content of the substrate is inhibitory to the dairy starter culture bacteris, through an essential final stage where the protein and carbohydrate content of the substrate is converted substantially entirely to yeast cells, thereby producing an edible yeast cell mass product substantially free from whey protein, lactose, lactic acid, and bacteria cells.

    • A reference thermal conductivity detector and a measuring thermal conductivity detector are connected in different branches of an electrical bridge circuit. The bridge is excited at one power node by a clamped square wave symmetrical about a base voltage line; and the other power node is excited by a feedback circuit sensing the signal at the signal nodes and maintaining the average value of the common mode signal at zero relative to the base line. The output signal taken from the signal nodes is fed to a demodulator circuit for generating an output signal representative of the thermal conductivity of the sample being sensed. Delay circuits are provided for inhibiting the operation of the demodulator during those periods when the polarity of the bridge input power signal is changing.

    • A reacted, palatable, nontoxic, processed food product for ruminant animals comprising a protein and energy producing composition having modified interacted protein and energy producing constituents wherein the energy producing constituent is derived from a starch bearing material such as initially ungelatinized grains, grasses, roughage, or vegetable starches and the protein producing constituent is derived form a nonprotein nitrogenous substance such as urea, other amides or ammonium salts. The material and substance are admixed and then processed in an extruder-cooker in the presence of sufficient moisture and under conditions of heat and pressure to assure gelatinization of a major proportion of the starch in the starch bearing material while intimately intermingled with the nonprotein nitrogenous substance to produce the reacted composition. The processed product is characterized by slower ammonia release from the nonprotein nitrogenous substance, increased synthesis of rumen microbial protein, reduced toxicity, and avoidance of the problem of constituent segregation often encountered with mixed feed compositions.
