    • A control mechanism for controlling the flow of a particulate material through a conduit and comprises a bladder mounted within the conduit that is inflatable between a first, deflated state and a second, inflated state. In its first, deflated state the bladder allows the particulate material to flow freely through the conduit, and in its second, inflated state the conduit is substantially blocked by the inflated bladder and no particulate material may pass. An alternate embodiment of an exteriorly mounted control mechanism comprises a stopper that is moved between a first, open position away from an open end of the conduit and a second, closed position in which the stopper is in sealing contact with end of the conduit.

    • Apparatus for specifying invocations in compiled objects at runtime. One species of the apparatus is a drawing widget for use in the X Window System. The drawing widget permits users to specify elements in the window corresponding to the widget by providing a sequence of invocations of X Window graphics functions to the widget at runtime. A resource in the drawing widget is set to the sequence of invocations and when the corresponding window is exposed, the invocations in the sequence are executed to produce the elements in the window. The sequence of function invocations may include invocations for functions which add or remove elements from the window and which translate, rotate, or scale elements. Other features include the use of unit coordinates in the invocation and the use of hashing to reduce the character-string invocations provided in the sequence to representations made up of small integer, pointer, and floating-point data.

    • Compositions are described including free-flowing particles of controlled size of purified metal halides such as sodium iodide and mixtures of sodium iodide with scandium iodide. These ultra-pure metal halide particles are particularly useful as a vaporizable fill disposed within an arc tube of a high pressure electric discharge device. The preparation and identification of the coordination entity Na.sup.+ScI.sub.4.sup.- (III) is also described. The apparatus for producing purified metal halides of accurately controlled particle size includes means for evaporating volatiles from the solid impure metal halide, melting the impure halide, passing hydrogen, hydrogen halide, hydrogen and halogen, or mixtures thereof through the halide, and then passing the molten halide through a vibrating discharge conduit or nozzle into an inert quenching atmosphere to form the particles of purified halide.
