Stuffing-box joints. - A swivel joint connecting two pipe portions of a fireextinguishing appliance, comprises a thimble 18 screwed to the stand pipe 1 and surrounded by a packing gland 19. The thimble and gland fit into a recess in a housing 20 secured to the elbow pipe 14. The gland is screwed up tight to packing 21 by screws 22 entering the housing 20. The latter has secured to it a lever for directing the elbow pipe towards a desired point. The joint is locked in adjusted position by a brake shoe 27 carried by a screw 28.

Controlling by contact with obstructions.-To throw out the clutch of a plough tractor when an obstruction is engaged or when the tractor moves backwards, a spring linkage connected with the draw-links C is employed. In this the nuts E , E' on rods D carry pins E . E engaging in slotted links attached to a lever E pivoted on the projection D . The link E is connected by a rod G to a declutching device, and, when owing to a share engaging an immovable obstacle, the angle between the links C and the plough frame is increased, the rod D is pulled downwards against the pressure of the spring E , the pin E' pressing back the link E and moving the rod G. If the tractor backs, the rod D moves in the opposite direction and the pin E moves its link to operate the lever E and the clutch rod G. Another device for operating the declutching rod comprises a pinion operated by the movement of the lever E to move a circular plate mounted on slides supported by the axle casing C , the clutch rod being connected to a strap encircling this plate. Another declutching arrangement, Fig. 13, shows the member B connected to the tractor by links S, S', a cushioning-device W -W being provided. Rods S are provided adjustably carrying cylinders S within which move pistons S on the ends of the rod S pivoted to extensions S of the axle casing. Springs S', S , strong enough to resist an ordinary pull, are interposed between the ends of the cylinders and the pistons. Bands S' free to rotate on the cylinders S , are connected by slotted links T, T and pins T , T , to members T rotatable on a shaft T carried by the extensions S . The shaft T carries a pinion engaging a rack on the clutch-operating rod.
