    • A Mixed Media Reality (MMR) system and associated techniques are disclosed. The MMR system provides mechanisms for forming a mixed media document that includes media of at least two types (e.g., printed paper as a first medium and digital content and/or web link as a second medium). In one embodiment, an MMR document is retrieved based on recognition of a paper document. Responsive to a comparison of the paper document and a virtual multimedia document, a set of actions is displayed to a user. Responsive to a user selection, the user-selected action is performed. In another embodiment, a captured list of names is used to assist a user with labeling a media file.

    • A multimedia printing device receives multimedia data, processes it, and outputs it, thereby enhancing the handling and use of such data. In an embodiment, the processed data are output in a variety of formats, including on video paper, through a multimedia broadcast, or a bar code pointer to a digital archive. In another embodiment, the multimedia printing device receives multimedia data and uses the data to perform multimedia and video localization on the peripheral devices that generate the multimedia data. In another embodiment, the multimedia printing device carries out commands to capture and process multimedia data, including by inserting multimedia objects into existing documents.

    • The system of the present invention allows a user to generate a representation of time-based media. The system of the present invention includes a feature extraction module for extracting features from media content. For example, the feature extraction module can detect solos in a musical performance, or can detect music, applause speech, and the like. A formatting module formats a media representation generated by the system. The formatting module also applies feature extraction information to the representation, and formats the representation according to a representation specification. In addition, the system can include an augmented output device that generates a media representation based on the feature extraction information and the representation specification. The methods of the present invention include extracting features from media content, and formatting a media representation being generated using the extracted features and based on a specification or data structure specifying the representation format. The methods can also include generating a media representation based on the results of the formatting.
