[Also in Division A2] In apparatus for drying mixtures of solid and liquid components to form soluble products, e.g. powders of food products, the material to be dried is formed as a stationary layer in one or more treatment vessels 15 . . . 18 on a porous diaphragm 31 and a moisture free gaseous drying medium, e.g. pure nitrogen or carbon dioxide, at a temperature insufficient to vaporize the liquid component, e.g. 2 to 80 C., is passed vertically upward therethrough at a specified pressure equal to the sum of pressures necessary to overcome the flow resistance of the material, the hydrostatic pressure of the material layer and the flow pressure through the gaseous medium through the material being dried. Material to be dried, e.g. coffee or tea extract, which has the aromatic and flavouring components removed by a stripper 1 for later addition in a collector 38 from an adsorbent chamber 8 to the dried material passes into the treatment vessels 15, 18 or on to a perforated conveyer divided into treatment zones (Fig. 2). An inert gas, dried in adsorption beds 23, 23 1 and at a temperature insufficient to vaporize moisture in the material is circulated serially through beds 18, 17, 16 respectively and directly through bed 15 via a pump 4 and a heater 5. The gas is recirculated for retreatment via lines 27. The material is formed as beds of 1 to 100 mm. thickness on diaphragms, e.g. of polyethylene monofilaments having a pore diameter of 10 to 100 microns so that the upward flow of gas therethrough is widely dispersed and the dried material is formed in a porous, pumiceous manner. Stirrers 32 rotatable about a vertical axis and movable in axial direction are positioned in the or each vessel and may be formed as a grinding means. In modifications, the reaction vessels may be superposed and/or comprise an additional post-drying chamber and various discharge means are described.
