Vibration - dampers. -Means for retarding motion between two relatively moving elements comprises a pair of coaxial drums mounted on one of the elements and co-operating with a friction member connected to the other element, and a spring which retards relative movement in one direction between the drums and the friction member. A drum 4 is formed integral with a base 3 fixed to one of the elements x and having mounted on it a cover 7 carrying a drum 5 coaxial with the drum 4, the cover 7 and drum 5 having a central aperture in which a member 9 is rotatably mounted. The inner end of a spring 10 is attached to the member 9 and the outer end is connected by a hook 12 to a pin 13 which passes through a member 14 located between the drums 4, 5 and attached to a flexible band 18 connected to the other element and riveted to a friction band 17 formed as an incomplete ring surrounding the drums 4, 5. Friction between the bands 17, 18 is reduced by a member 20 whirh encircle the band 17.

    • 15,574. Marks, E. C. R., [Vedder, J. W.]. Nov.4. Swivelling joints; joints for concentric pipes.-Relates to pipe joints, particularly of the type used in supplying steam to a rotating drum or the like and for conducting away the water of condensation, in which two pairs of pipes are employed, one pair being stationary and the other pair rotatable. According to the invention, the joint comprises a stationary part 16, Fig. 1, having one passage 17 surrounded by the other passage 18, a rotating part 3 having corresponding passages 8, 9, a floating joint disk 22 located between the parts and having openings registering with the passages 8, 9, 17, 18, and spring means for pressing the parts 3, 16 together, the arrangement permitting a limited transverse movemnt of the part 3 in relation to the part 16 and allowing the disk 22 to effect a tight joint although the axes of the passages 8, 17 may not be in exact alinement. In the construction shown, the steam is supplied to the rotating drum 1 of a paper-drying machine through the outer passages 18, 9, and the water is drawn off, through dippers 5 located in the drum, and thence through the inner passages 8, 17. In a modification, the steam is supplied through the inner passages. The valve disk 22 is preferably formed with its surfaces on one side constituting a portion of a single plane surface, and on the other side a portion of a single spherical surface. Bolts 29, Fig. 3, with surrounding springs 28 are employed to press the parts 3, 16 together, and, in the event of excessive pressure occurring in the passages, the springs 29 yield and the disk 22 acts as a safetyvalve by separating from one or other of the two parts 3, 16.
