    • 14,738. Jenkins, C. F. June 23. Cupping and the like.-Close-fitting ends of tubular containers having easily-crushable thin walls are made and fixed in position by the machine shown. The container bodies are held in semicylindrical holders projecting from the links of an endless belt, and are intermittently fed forwards. A suitable plunger cuts a hole 18, Fig. 3, in a paper strip, and then a hollow plunger 20 cuts out a disk 11 concentric with this hole. A plunger 21 then forces the disk through a forming-die 22 and into the mouth of the container 6. When it is desired to have the disk flush with the edge of the body with its flange inside, a plunger 26 forces it down through the body until it rests on the link 4. The plunger 26 is encircled by a sleeve 34, which moves with the plunger until it strikes the bottle body. The friction between the plunger and sleeve is adjusted by the band 35 and screw 36. When the plunger returns, the sleeve accompanies it until its head 37 meets the bearing 38, and the spring stop 39 engages the aperture 40. The second end of the container is made and inserted by a cutting- die 43 and plunger 44. If paraffined paper is used, the pressure exerted by the machine permanently seals the ends. Various forms of plungers and coacting mechanism may be used. The forming- die 50, Fig. 5, may be provided with guide-pins 51 and controlled by springs 52, while it is also provided with a bevelled undercut surface 53, which takes over the upper end of the body 6 and forms the same into a circle. Either a collapsible plunger or a solid plunger provided with perforations is used. In a modification, an unperforated solid plunger is employed, and bars 79, Fig. 12, are mounted to slide in ways in the die 50. The outer ends of these bars are provided with T-shaped slots engaging inclined guide-bars 80. As the die 50 descends, the bars 79 are moved to clear the recess 53, but as it ascends they move inwards and prevent the container from rising with the plunger. The movable die 50 may be replaced by fixed die 83, Fig. 18, in which case the container mouth is brought into circular shape by pivoted arms 84 connected with the plunger 74.
