    • A fuel injection control for an engine includes an improved construction that can hold an accurate atmospheric pressure data during and after starting of the engine. The engine includes an air intake passage. A throttle valve is moveably disposed within the air intake passage. A first sensor is arranged to sense an opening degree of the throttle valve. A fuel injector is arranged to spray fuel toward a combustion chamber of the engine. A control unit is configured to determine an amount of the fuel at least based upon an opening degree data sensed by the first sensor. A second sensor is primarily arranged to sense an intake pressure of the air flowing through the air intake passage. The second sensor is positioned downstream the throttle valve. The control unit adjusts a fuel amount based upon a reference data corresponding to an atmospheric pressure. The control unit includes a non-volatile memory for storing the intake pressure data as the reference data when the control unit starts operating and the engine stands still.

    • A watercraft has an overturn detector. The detector communicates with a controller to prevent a false overturn signal. The controller does not act on overturn signals when the watercraft is operating above a preset engine speed associated with planning mode. The controller stops the engine when the overturn signal persists for longer than a predetermined period of time while the engine is operating below the preset engine speed. The controller also monitors the overturn detector for failure. In the event of a failure during engine starting, the engine is allowed to run while the operator is alerted. In the event of a failure during engine operation, the engine is stopped and the operator is alerted if the watercraft is not in planing mode. If the failure during engine operation occurs when the watercraft is in planing mode, the operator is alerted but the engine is not stopped.

    • A method and apparatus for providing corrected throttle valve opening data to the ECU for calculation of various engine parameters includes computing a throttle opening adjustment value H by subtracting a sensed throttle valve opening S from a actual throttle valve opening D at engine idle. An adjusted throttle valve opening K is computed throughout the range of throttle openings by adding the adjustment value H to the sensed throttle valve opening S. In this manner, an erroneous sensed throttle valve opening S is corrected by the adjustment value H. The process of determining the throttle valve adjustment value preferably is performed at the engine idle state and can be triggered by a physical trigger; by connecting and disconnecting certain electronic devices from the ECU according to a prescribed pattern; by shifting an outboard motor from a neutral to a forward or reverse state; or by other triggering means.

    • The present vehicle data system collects, encodes, transmits, decodes, and displays engine and vehicle operation information. In one mode, an engine control unit of an outboard boat motor receives a plurality of engine and vehicle operation parameters from a plurality of sensors. The engine control unit encodes the plurality of parameters in a single signal and transmits the encoded signal to a display unit over a signal line. The display unit decodes the encoded signal to extract the plurality of parameters and displays the extracted parameters to the vehicle operator.

    • An internal combustion engine includes an improved feedback control system and method for operating the engine to provide the desired air/fuel ratio under all running conditions without causing unsettling variations in engine speed and torque as adjustments to the air/fuel ratio are made. The feedback control operates to modify the fuel/air ratio from that achieved by a basic setting that is derived from parameters of engine performance so as to maintain the desired ratio. The control system also adjust the ignition timing while the air and fuel ratio is adjusted toward the desired ratio to maintain generally constant engine speed and torque.

    • A watercraft engine includes a lubrication system alarm control system which initiates an alarm when lubricant pressure within the lubrication system falls below an acceptable pressure. The alarm system compares lubricant pressure during engine operation with a lower pressure threshold which is determined as a function of engine speed. Thus, partial reductions in lubricant pressure are identified. Additionally, the alarm control system may be configured to emit an alarm if lubricant pressure fluctuates at a rate that is greater than a predetermined pressure fluctuation rate threshold.
