    • An absorbent article comprises a backsheet and an absorbent layer, where the absorbent layer comprises a flexible superabsorbent binder polymer composition positioned adjacent to the backsheet. The absorbent layer may additionally include a substrate, and the article may additionally include a topsheet. The flexible superabsorbent binder polymer composition may be made from the reaction product of a monomer solution including at least 15% by weight monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, an acrylate or methacrylate ester that contains an alkoxysilane functionality, a copolymerizable hydrophilic glycol containing an ester monomer, an initiator system, and a neutralizing agent. The result is an absorbent article which exhibits improved performance as well as greater comfort and confidence among the user.

    • Polymer compositions which are highly absorbent to aqueous electrolyte solutions are prepared by copolymerization of an ampholytic monomer having the formula of ##STR1## where one and only one of the substituted groups R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 must be a vinyl group, the rest can be the same or different and can be hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl group; R.sub.5 is a phenyl group; n is .gtoreq.1 and .ltoreq.6; and q is 0 or 1; and an olefin monomer having an ethylenic structure as well as by graft copolymerization of at least an olefin monomer having an ethylenic structure and an ampholytic monomer having the formula disclosed above onto a main polymer selected from the group consisting of polysacchardies and polyolefins. Also disclosed is a process for absorbing large quantity of aqueous electrolyte solution employing the polymer compositions.

    • The present invention provides graft copolymers that are highly absorbent to aqueous electrolyte solutions. The graft copolymer is formed by the graft polymerizing an effective amount of each of the following components together to provide a highly absorbent copolymer:(a) graft polymerizing onto a first polymer selected from the group consisting of polysaccharide, polypropylene, polyethylene and other polyolefins, and at least one comonomer selected from the group consisting of acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, alkali salts of acrylic acid, alkali salts of methacrylic acid, 2-methacryloyloxyethyltrimethylamine, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, alkali salts of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, 2-methacryloyloxyethane sulfonic acid, alkali salts of 2-methacryloyloxyethane sulfonic acid, and any combination of two or more thereof; and(b) graft polymerizing therewith an ampholytic ion pair monomer comprising(i) an ammonium cation 2-methacryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium and(ii) a sulfonate anion selected from the group consisting of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate, 2-methacryloyloxyethane sulfonate, vinyl sulfonate, styrene sulfonate and any combination of thereof.
