    • The present invention provides a power distribution system that can be used in naval ships and submarines. The power distribution system includes a first power generation system including at least one power source (13,14,15) for supplying power to a first service distribution system. The first service distribution system includes at least one dc distribution busbar (25) for carrying a distribution voltage and a distribution current and at least one switchboard (16) that includes protective switchgear with contacts. A zonal power distribution sub-system is also provided and includes a zonal power supply unit (23) for supplying power to at least one electrical load and a zonal energy store (22) connected to the at least one switchboard (16) of the first service distribution system for supplying power to the zonal power supply unit (23). The at least one power source (13,14,15) is regulated according to a power source foldback and stabilising characteristic and a power source starting characteristic. The at least one electrical load is regulated according to a load shedding and stabilising characteristic.

    • An improved stator (28) for rotating electrical machines with single-layer stator windings consisting of a plurality of pre-formed coils (22) of equal angular pitch. The stator (28) has a first cylindrical surface in which a plurality of circumferentially spaced winding slots (30) are formed and in which the axially-extending winding runs (24) of the pre-formed coils (22) are positioned. The two winding runs (24) of each coil (22) will each be positioned in a winding slot (30) and the two winding slots (30) that receive the coil (22) define a winding slot pair. The improvement arises from the fact that the winding slots (30) of each winding slot pair extend into the stator (28) in substantially parallel directions. This means that the axially-extending winding runs (24) of each pre-formed coil (22) may also be substantially parallel and need not be angled towards each other. This enables the stator (28) to be easily wound as each pre-formed coil (22) may be simply and easily slotted into a parallel winding slot pair.

    • The current invention provides an improved synchronous tubular electrical machine comprised of a radially outer member (2) that has a substantially cylindrical inner surface, a radially inner member (5) that is substantially cylindrical and is coaxially disposed within the outer member (2) such that it may move reciprocally relative to the outer member (2) in the axial direction. A plurality of axially spaced circumferential armature coils (1) are electrically insulated from one another and are formed as part of one of the outer member (2) and the inner member (5). A plurality of axially spaced circumferential superconducting coils (4) are formed as part of the other of the outer member (2) and the inner member (5). During operation of the tubular machine, each superconducting coil (4) is maintained in a superconducting state and an electrical current is supplied to each superconducting coil (4) in such a manner that the current flowing around each coil is in the opposite direction to the current flowing around the coils adjacent to it. Tubular machines according to the present invention may be significantly more efficient, have higher peak-mean power ratios and be much smaller than current permanent magnet based synchronous tubular electrical machines.

    • POWER CONVERTERS The present invention is a power converter for interfacing a motor that requires a variable voltage at variable frequency to a supply network (bus) providing a nominally fixed voltage and nominally fixed frequency. It includes a first and second active rectifier/inverters both of which include a plurality of semiconductor power switching devices, a first controller using a dc link voltage demand signal indicative of a desired dc link voltage to control the semiconductor powered devices of the first active rectifier/inverter, and a second controller using a power demand signal indicative of the level of power to be transferred and a voltage demand signal indicative of the voltage to be achieved to control the semiconductor powered devices of the second active rectifier/inverter to achieve the desired levels of power and voltage that correspond to the power and voltage demand signals. The power converter can be employed in a marine propulsion system.
