A serrated arm e bears upon the sprinkler arranged below the water-outlet, the two arms e, b being separated by a rod g and spring i when a sleeve h is moved to disengage a bayonet-fastening k, l. The apparatus may be modified to suit a vertically projecting outlet. Another form is shown in Fig. 5, comprising a body m secured to the water-nozzle by a bayonet-fastening and completely enclosing the nozzle and sprayer.

Liquids, distributing. -To the rear of a wheeled tar-boiler are fixed distributing- means for the tar and a brushing-device to spread the tar on the road. Attached to the tap B of the boiler A is a pipe h with two channels h , down which the tar passes to a straight or curved perforated distributing-pipe i, provided with removable end flanges or plugs j, Fig. 3, for cleaning purposes. Angle-iron uprights a are bolted to metal extensions from the boiler, and a cross angle-iron c bolted to the end plate of the boiler forms a stay between them. Pivoted to the uprights a at d' are two arms d, the lower ends of which carry the axle e of a non-driven brush f which revolves and spreads the tar when the boiler A is drawn along. The axle e may be journaled in the ends of the arms d, or may be fixed thereto, the brush f being then loose on the axle. To regulate the pressure of the brush on the road and to raise it out of contact with the road when desired, quadrant arms d' are attached to the arms d and move through slotted brackets g, being locked by pins g . A curved metallic cover k bolted to the arms d may partly enclose the brush f. The brush f may consist of a number of sections in line on the axle e, and when loose on the axle, the holes in the brush bodies may be of larger diameter than the axle passing through them, so that they can fall independently when inequalities in the road surface are met. Instead of circular brushes, flat brushes may be mounted on the ends of the arms d.
