    • An automated method of controlling a power managed system, such as a power over Ethernet system. The method is constituted of: establishing a power consumption budget for a plurality of loads; defining an overbudget limit and an associated time window; monitoring power consumption of the plurality of loads; determining, at a plurality of time intervals over the associated time window, an indication of excess power consumption for each of the plurality of time intervals, the indication of excess power consumption being a function of the monitored power consumption and the defined power consumption budget; and in the event that an integral over the associated time window of a function of the determined indications of excess power consumption exceeds the overbudget limit, disabling at least one load from consuming power.

    • An addressable SPI bus and an associated communication protocol. The addressable SPI bus comprises a plurality of slaves each exhibiting a particular address and a shift register whose output is connected to a common MISO bus by a buffer exhibiting a three state output, also known as a tri-state output. The master asserts a single SS line, which is connected in parallel to each of the plurality of slaves, indicating the beginning of a frame, and transmits via the MOSI bus the address of a particular slave of the plurality of slaves, denoted interchangeably the target or destination slave. Responsive to the received address, the target slave enables the three state output associated therewith thus transmitting the output of the target slave shift register to the master via the MISO bus.

    • A method for communicating multi-bit data from a powered device being powered over communication cabling to power sourcing equipment, the method comprising: exhibiting a signature indicative of a device to be powered over communication cabling; sensing a voltage level indicative of remote powering over communication cabling; prior to connecting power to operational circuitry, transmitting first multi-bit information; subsequently to the transmitting first multi-bit information, connecting power received over the communication cabling to the operational circuitry; receiving information from the operational circuitry; subsequent to receiving the information disconnecting the received power from the operational circuitry; subsequent to the disconnecting, transmitting second multi-bit information associated with the operational circuitry, the second multi-bit information comprising at least one bit being a function of the received information; and re-connecting power received over the communication cabling to the operational circuitry.
