    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reagent, method and apparatus for effectively isolating cellular components such as ribonucleic acid (RNA) from cells.
      SOLUTION: Provided are a reagent, method and apparatus for isolating cellular components such as RNA from cells in a liquid solution. The apparatus comprises (i) a holder containing RNA extractant solvent, a plurality of micron-sized particles and at least one of larger particles; (ii) a cover assembly removably fastened onto the holder and having a cavity therein which is of sufficient volume to contain the liquid medium and the extraction solvent; and (iii) a friable sealing layer adapted to be broken by the larger particle upon reciprocating motion of the container, the sealing layer being adapted to separate the extractant solvent from the liquid medium until the sealing layer is broken by the larger particle.
