    • In accordance with certain embodiments, an optical network terminal (ONT) is provided that comprises a processor module, a serializer module and an optical transmitter. The processor module may represent an FPGA device, while the serializer may represent a SERDES, with the FPGA device and SERDES being formed as distinct and separate components. The processor module is configured to generate data bursts that are associated with time slots in a time division multiplexing transmission scheme. The processor module outputs the data bursts over parallel channels to the serializer module that, in turn, serializes the data bursts and outputs serial data bursts over a serial channel. The serializer module has a latency representing an amount of time for each of the data bursts to propagate through the serializer module from the parallel channels to the serial channel. The optical transmitter is joined to the serial channel and converts the serial data bursts to optical data bursts. The processor module determines a latency of the serializer module and controls the optical transmitter based on the latency of the serializer module. Optionally, the processor module may provide a burst enable signal that turns on and off the optical transmitter in order to align the optical data bursts with the corresponding time slots in the time division multiplexing transmission scheme.

    • A portable navigation device (400) is provided that includes integrated language dictionary/translation features. The navigation device includes a user interface (426, 428, 434, 435) configured to enable an operator to enter navigation instructions as well as language dictionary/translation instructions. A receiver (438) is provided that is configured to receive signals from global positioning system (GPS) satellites. Memory (468) in the device stores language dictionary/translation information. A processor module (436) receives the navigation instruction and language translation instruction, obtains obtaining navigation information based on the navigation instruction, obtains language translation information from the memory based on the language translation instruction entered by the operator. An output is provided for presenting the navigation information and the language translation information to the operator (e.g. audibly and/or visually) .

    • A subnetwork connection system is provided that includes line modules configures to receive traffic signals over bridged, individual corresponding channels. The line modules are grouped into sets at a lower protection layer, while the sets of line modules are organized into working legs and protection legs at an upper protection layer. The line modules are activated and deactivated based on different upper and lower protection schemes associated with the upper and lower protection layers. The subconnection system further includes state maps associated with each of the line modules. The state maps store state data that activates and deactivates the line modules. The state maps are updates in accordance with the lower protection scheme to permit intra-leg switching between the line modules in one of the working and protection legs. The state map is also updated in accordance with the upper protection scheme to perform inter-leg switching between a first line module in one of the working and protection legs and a second line module in the other of the working and protection legs. The subnetwork connection system also includes a network control module interconnected with the line modules. The control module performs inter-leg switching by updating the state data in the state maps for corresponding line modules in associated working and protection legs.
