    • A synthetic aperture side looking sonar system which includes an array of active elements, which provide output signals in response to acoustic reflections received from a target area, during travel over the target area. The array has a first section of elements, the output signals of which are used to obtain target information. The array additionally has a second section, including space apart transducers, the output signals of which are used exclusively to determine yaw and sway of the system, as it travels over the target area. Signal processing circuitry, using displaced phase center principles, is provided, and is responsive to the element output signals to derive yaw and sway correction signals for synthetic aperture beam formation.

    • Electro-thermal feedback is utilized for zeroing the thermal conductance between a bolometer type detector element of a pixel in a thermal radiation sensor assembly and the environments through its mechanical support structure and electrical interconnects, thereby limiting the thermal conductance primarily through photon radiation. Zeroing of the thermal conductance associated with the mechanical support and electrical readout interconnect structures is achieved by electro-thermal feedback that adjust the temperature of an intermediate stage by the heating effect of a bipolar transistor amplifier circuit so that the temperature across the mechanical support and electrical interconnects structures are zeroed thereby greatly improving the thermal isolation, the responsivity and sensitivity of the electromagnetic radiation sensor.

    • A vertically integrated Ka-band active electronically scanned antenna including, among other things, a transitioning RF waveguide relocator panel (69) located behind a radiator faceplate (68) and an array of beam control tiles (60) respectively coupled to one of a plurality of transceiver modules (32) via an RF manifold (52). Each of the beam control tiles (60) includes a respective plurality of high power transmit/receive (T/R) cells (166) as well as dielectric waveguides (123), RF stripline (174) and coaxial transmission line elements (186). The waveguide relocator panel (69) is preferably fabricated by a diffusion bonded copper laminate stack up with dielectric filling. The beam control tiles (60) are preferably fabricated by the use of multiple layers of low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) material laminated together. The waveguide relocator panel (69) and the beam control tiles (60) are designed to route RF signals to and from a respective transceiver module of four transceiver modules (32) and a quadrature array of antenna radiators (67) matched to free space formed in the faceplate (68). Planar type metal spring gaskets (78, 82) are provided between the interfacing layers so as to provide and ensure interconnection between mutually facing waveguide ports and to prevent RF leakage from around the perimeter of the waveguide ports. Cooling of the various components is achieved by a pair of planar forced air heat sink members (76, 86) which are located on either side of the array of beam control tiles (60). DC power and control of the T/R cells is provided by a printed circuit wiring board assembly (84) located adjacent to the array of beam controlled tiles (60) with solderless DC connections being provided by an arrangement of "fuzz button" electrical connector elements (80).

    • This invention is directed to a method and apparatus using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology for automatically collecting air samples and identifying biological agents in the air sample. A fully automated system is provided that is capable of detecting transient events such as bacillus anthracis in a piece of mail being processed on high-speed mail processing equipment. The system includes apparatus for implementing the following features: particle collection and pre-separation using a collection hood and dry cyclone passive filtration system; continuous particle collection into a liquid sample; automated fluid transferto a PCR analysis cartridge at pre-scheduled times; automated cartridge handling and transfer to PCR bio-agent identification apparatus for detecting a bio-agent in a piece of mail; automatic retesting of the liquid sample upon various error conditions; automatic confirmation testing upon preliminary positive results; automated fluid transfer to archive containers at the completion of analysis; and, automated notification/reporting system to alert designated personnel/organizations upon the occurrence of selected events such as the presence of bacillus antracis.
