    • The invention discloses an improved high-performance drive coupling for a motor, comprising a motor which is connected non-positively to the driven device via a viscous coupling which can be operated selectively by the application of hydraulic pressure. An improved electrically activated control valve serves to control the hydraulic control pressure applied to the coupling and has a control circuit for the actuation of the control valve in order to accelerate the driven device as required. In some applications, a plurality of these drive arrangements can be employed to drive a common device and, in this arrangement, the control devices for the pressurisation of the coupling can be positioned in between in order to achieve a certain progressively delayed pressurisation of the various couplings. The control circuit can also contain a safety correction device which serves to disconnect the coupling in order to decouple the motor from the driven device in the event of abnormal operating conditions.

    • There is disclosed herein a clutch-brake unit having a clutch disc pack and a separate brake disc pack which are designed for selective actuation by a single piston arrangement to transmit rotational driving forces from an input shaft to an output shaft via the clutch disc pack and to brake rotation of the ouput shaft via the brake disc pack as desired. An integral oil pump is provided on the input shaft and cooperates with portions of the housing to provide a high volume centrifugal pumping action to continuously circulate oil through passages provided in the housing, input shaft, output shaft and across the clutch and brake disc pads so as to cool them. In one embodiment, the integral oil pump includes a pump chamber separate from the central cavity formed by the housing and also working chambers for the clutch and brake disc packs are separated from the central cavity by annular inner housings. Provisions are also incorporated whereby the oil flow may be directed to external auxiliary apparatus such as oil cooler if desired.

    • 1357061 Friction clutches G M SOMMER CO Inc 29 March 1972 [5 April 1971] 14830/72 Heading F2C In an hydraulically operated multi-disc friction clutch wherein clutch discs 124, 130 are respectively splined to a clutch hub 80 and a drum 136, the clutch hub 80 and drum 136 are detachably secured to driving and driven hubs 40, 42 by bolts 154, 142 to permit transverse removal of the clutch assembly. Removal is facilitated by passing a draw bolt through bores 186 in the hub 80 and into threaded bores 184 in the drum 136 to draw the latter off the hub 42. A pump P supplies pressure liquid through ducts 122, 110, 100 to a clutch actuating cylinder 88 which is axially slidable on a fixed piston 96 and also supplies cooling and lubricating liquid through ducts 160, 164, 169, 170 and orifices 172 to the clutch discs 124, 130. The clutch discs 124 have a steel core with sintered bronze facings that are grooved to produce parallelogram shaped projections.
