    • A digital subscriber line (xDSL) communication system (10) is disclosed that allows xDSL communication across a local loop. The system (10) includes a local loop termination point (14) and customer premises equipment (12) connected to a twisted pair telephone line (16). Loop integrity test devices (22, 24) for xDSL communication are located at the local loop termination point (14) and the customer premises equipment (12) and are coupled to the telephone line (16). The loop integrity test devices (22, 24) are respectively operable to transmit test signatures across the telephone line (16), to receive and evaluate test signatures from the telephone line (16), and to indicate whether the telephone line (16) can support xDSL communication based upon evaluation of test signatures.

    • A method is provided for communicating on an equipment network. According to the method, a message is sent from a sending equipment unit to a receiving equipment unit as a signal having a nominal power. Whenever the signal is amplified by an intermediate equipment unit through which the signal passes, the message is modified to indicate that the signal has been amplified by the intermediate equipment unit. Also provided is a first equipment unit for connection to an equipment network. The first equipment unit includes a receiver for receiving a signal that was sent by a sending equipment unit at a nominal power level, means for measuring data representative of a quality of the received signal, means for comparing the measured data with a first threshold, means for amplifying the signal when the measured data is below the first threshold, means for modifying a message carried by the signal so as to indicate that the signal has been amplified whenever the signal is amplified by the means for amplifying, and a transmitter for sending the signal on to a receiving equipment unit. Additionally, there is provided a message that includes an information word having a value that indicates the number of times that the signal containing the message has been amplified by intermediate equipment units located on an network between sending and receiving equipment units.

    • A remote telephone testing device (22) includes a transmitter (30), a receiver (24), a controller (26) and a test circuit (28). In response to the receiver (24) receiving a test signal from a test system (20) via a telephone network (2, 4, 6, 8), the controller (26) communicatively isolates telephone equipment (10) of a subscriber (S) from the telephone network (2, 4, 6, 8) and connects the test circuit (28) to the telephone equipment (10). The test circuit (28) tests the telephone equipment (10) and conveys one or more results of such test to the controller (26) which relays the one or more results to the test system (20) via the transmitter (30). When testing is complete, the telephone equipment (10) is isolated from the test circuit (28) and is communicatively connected to the telephone network (2, 4, 6, 8).

    • A communications system is tested to simulate a realistic conversation. A first measurement device make a call, through the system it is testing, to a second measurement device and the two devices converse using predetermined speech generated dynamically by each device in response to the signals received from the other, to simulate aspects of conversation over non-perfect communications system link. The progress of the conversation will therefore take different courses according to the quality of the link. For example, if an expected signal is detected by one device, it transmits an appropriate predetermined response to the other device. However, if the expected signal is corrupted, or not received at all, different predetermined responses (or no response at all) are transmitted to the other device. This in turn may cause the other device to repeat the original signal. Because all the responses, including those to poor quality signals, are predetermined, each device can readily determine the quality of the signals received, because each signal received by one device form the other must be one of a limited number of possible responses to the last transmission made by the one device to the other. The devices perform measurements on the sounds they receive from each other, and monitor the progress of the conversation to compute parameters describing aspects of the received signal quality.

    • A testing system for voice system equipment in a switchboard includes a testing maintenance terminal for inputting telephone number information of an ordinary subscriber's telephone that is to be designated as a maintenance party telephone.
