    • The invention relates to dual mode antennas particularly suitable for mobile stations. The antenna structure comprises an antenna (211, 201, 202, 212) of the PIFA type which is located within the covers of the mobile station, and a whip element (220) which is movable relating to the PIFA antenna. The PIFA can be a single band or a dual band antenna. When the whip element is extracted its lower end (222) forms a galvanic or capacitive coupling with the radiating element (211) of the PIFA. If the PIFA is a single band antenna the extracted whip element substantially changes the resonant frequency of the PIFA, so that the whip is left as the radiating element at the operating band. If the PIFA is a dual band antenna, then an extracted whip alone, or the whip and the planar element of the PIFA together, functions as the radiating element at one operating band, and at the other operating band the planar element of the PIFA operates as the radiating element. The feeding and the matching of the whip element is arranged by the PIFA without any separate additional components. With the aid of the invention the best properties of both the PIFA and the monopole antenna can be utilised. The structure is further reliable and it has relatively low costs.

    • An antenna connector for radio communication equipment is disclosed. The above connector converts the conventional parallel resonance of an antenna into a series resonance by forming a flat cutout portion on its impedance transformer, or the signal feed part for the antenna, without changing the characteristics of the antenna, thus broadening the bandwidth of the antenna. The connector is also designed to control or broaden the bandwidth of the antenna in accordance with the structure of the impedance transformer. The connector of this invention easily and simply controls the bandwidth of an antenna by changing the size and height of the impedance transformer, by changing the surface area of the cutout portion of the impedance transformer, or by changing the number of turns of the antenna fitted over the impedance transformer. Therefore, the connector is effectively used at various frequencies, and effectively and quickly meets a variation of the central frequency of an antenna with the variation being caused by a change in environmental conditions of the antenna.

    • A low cost glass mount vehicle antenna system utilizes, in a preferred embodiment, an over-coupled quasi-TEM mode transmission line coupler having two simple stamped or printed plates stacked over an L shape internal ground plane. The two conductive plates are located on opposite sides of the glass. With proper open circuit terminations on two of the four coupler ports, the backwards and forward coupling signals are redirected/combined and are effectively fed diagonally between the other two ports, thereby achieving through-glass coupling. The over-coupling achieves this efficient through-glass coupling effect at two spaced-apart frequencies (e.g. 800 MHz and 1800 MHz). The coupler is of a low impedance type and can be used with a variety of collinear array and elevated-feed antennas. It features high efficiency, low backwards radiation, and mechanical simplicity.
