Mercury switches. - A cylindrical container for mercury or other conducting liquid is mounted for oscillation about its axis so that it moves substantially within its own dimensions and is approximately balanced in all positions; it is formed with pockets containing mercury &c. into which electrode contacts project, the circuit being broken by division of the mercury. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a cylindrical glass container with pockets 6, 7 having restricted outlets is detachably secured by spring clips 12 to a support, mounted for rotation bv means of the lever 11 on the fixed part 14. Contact electrodes project into the pockets approximately to the line of the inner curved periphery of the container. In the closed position, Fig. 2, the mercury fills the pockets and forms a bridge between them; when the container is rotated through a small angle the bridge is broken by division of the mercury at a point away from the sides of the container. The container may be evacuated or filled with inert gas. In the form shown in Fig. 3, a longer cylindrical container is employed with metal end caps connected with electrodes 8 , 9 , which extend from the interior into the mercury pockets. The container has reduced ends trunnioned into bearing posts 24, 25 and the leads from the end caps to the fixed terminals 26, 27 are wound around the reduced ends.
