    • An on-the-fly paper stack handler has a paper stack conveyor (12) for continuously serially conveying stacks of paper (96), a tray conveyor (16) disposed below and downstream of the paper stack conveyor (12) for continuously serially conveying trays, and a transfer conveyor extending between the paper stack conveyor (12) and the tray conveyor (16) for conveying stacks of paper (96) along a path from the paper stack conveyor (12) into the trays. The transfer conveyor has a platform (94) for supporting paper stacks and has pushers (80) extending downwardly into the path of the paper stacks so that these pushers may push the stacks into the trays and operate in close proximity to the trays. A rest arm (70) extending downstream from the transfer conveyor rests on the stacks in the trays to maintain control of same.

    • A self-adaptive stacker comprising infeed and stacking sections whose movement is coordinated to provide interception of the signature stream. A microprocessor utilizes a signal, representative of the infeed conveyor speed, together with a signal from a signature counter, to track the movement of each signature and thereby its arrival at the intercept position. Low armature inertia motors drive the three axes, (stacking section, the turntable, and the ejectors) to provide rapid starting, acceleration, deceleration, and stopping at selected positions. These motors are controlled to interact in real-time in order to adapt the three axes to the rate of the incoming signatures. The movement of the signature carriers is altered, when necessary, due to speed changes of the signature stream. A sensor located at the intercept ready position detects the passage of a signature carrier to initiate acceleration of the signature carrier by an amount which is a function principally of signature thickness, velocity, and separation distance to control the amount of acceleration required to move the carrier beneath the first signature of the next stack to be formed. A turntable section forms compensated bundles by rotating a platform. A pusher assembly is mounted beneath the rotatable turntable platform and includes pusher bars arranged by linkage members to move precisely along the path of the drive chain to enhance monitoring, control and movement of the push rods. A sensor senses the passage of a push rod to detect the initial movement and subsequent thereto the arrival of a push rod to the home position.

    • Multi-sheet printed products are formed in that a multiplicity of zig-zag configured folded webs aligned with respect to one another are deposited upon one another. Each web is formed by individual sheets which are interconnected with one another at fold locations extending transversely with respect to the lengthwise direction of the web. For supporting the webs which are to be placed upon one another there is provided a drum containing radially protruding support ribs at its circumference. Initially, the first web is placed upon the support ribs such that each second fold location comes to bear upon a support rib. The first web guided in a spiral-shaped formation upon the drum arrives at an infeed portion or section of the next following web where the second web, in the same manner as the first web, is placed thereover onto the support ribs. Both of the superimposed webs are guided along a screw or helical-shaped path, if desired to further infeed or inlet portions and finally to a removal portion or section where the structure formed of the superimposed webs is removed from the drum. The finished multisheet printed products, which are formed by the superimposed bearing sheets of the individual webs and are still hanging at one another, are then separated from one another individually or in packages. Since the individual superimposed sheets remain interconnected with one another until formation of the finished printed product, the sheets need not be individually manipulated, rather can be handled in their composite formation.

    • A method for filling a shipping carton with flat-folded boxes supplied in substantially horizontal shingled array from a processing machine, comprising positioning an empty carton in displaceable manner on a support below the supply from said processing machine, supporting said boxes in shingled array while advancing them along a curved path to substantially vertical shingled array, discharging said vertically shingled boxes successively into said carton, and supporting said discharged boxes on one flat surface thereof within said carton, whereby the force of said boxes as discharged causes said carton to be displaced on its support. The apparatus includes a pair of cooperating curved conveyors extending from said manufacturing machine conveyor to said carton, whereby said boxes are transferred from horizontal shingled array to vertical shingled array and are successively discharged into said carton in vertical disposition. A pulley about which one of the curved conveyors is trained, in operative position is disposed within said carton so that successively discharged boxes, with said pulley as a back stop, cause said carton to advance on its support. When the carton is filled, the pulley and its conveyor are raised, the carton is removed and replaced by an empty carton and the process is repeated.
