    • A cutting insert for grooving and parting as well as profiling and longitudinal turning of metallic work-pieces, includes a shaft part and at least one cutting head. There is a front end surface at the front end of the cutting insert, and a rear end surface at the rear end of the cutting insert. The shaft part includes a top side, a bottom side and side surfaces extending between the tope and bottom two sides. The cutting head carries a cutting edge defined by the intersection between a chip surface and a clearance surface. The cutting edge has a circular shape and has mainly a constant curvature between the ends thereof. The chip side of the cutting head is provided with a first chip-forming device placed immediately inside the cutting edge.

    • A method for applying cutting elements to a tool for cutting or milling a metal item in a well is disclosed, along with the cutting element used in the method. The tool can include one or more blades extending outwardly or downwardly from the tool for cutting a metal item such as the wall of a casing string, or for removing a predetermined length of a casing string in a cutting action. The blade or blades have cutting elements positioned on the leading faces of the blades to engage the casing string or other metal item in the bore hole. Each cutting element is composed of a plurality of effective cutting faces. Each cutting face can have a substantially triangular shape, or a substantially square shape, or some other geometric shape. The cutting elements can be arranged in a random pattern. Each cutting element can be oriented in a random orientation relative to the blade. The cutting elements are shaped so that, regardless of the positioning or orientation of a given cutting element, it will continually present a sharp cutting edge to the metal object being cut. Each cutting face of each cutting element can also have one or more surface irregularities to cause the metal chips cut from the casings to break off at short lengths.

    • A solid end mill is provided which can prolong the useful life of the tool, without any adhesion to the work material, even aluminum or similar material, during a or cutting or drilling operation. The solid end mill includes a chip discharge flute, which is formed in the outer periphery of a nearly cylindrical tool main body. The nearly cylindrical tool main body rotates around a central longitudinal axis. A cutting edge is formed at a ridge portion on the outer periphery of the tool main body. The cutting edge is adjacent to a wall surface constituting a rake face of the chip discharge flute. The rake face faces in the tool rotational direction. A convex portion may be formed so as to be adjacent to and raised from a concavely curved portion. The concavely curved portion stretches to the cutting edge and is formed between the flute bottom of the chip discharge flute and the cutting edge.

    • A cutting insert includes an upper chip surface, a bottom surface and side faces therebetween. At each of the end faces the cutting insert has axially protruding portions, each of which appears with a bevel face. Main cutting edges are provided in the intersection between the chip surface and the side surfaces. On each side surface is provided a clearance surface formed on a protruding portion which via a step clearance extends into a secondary helically twisted clearance surface, the chip angle of which increases with increasing cutting depth. The upper face includes along the main cutting edges a planar inclined surface with constant width that extends inwards and intersects with an upwardly inclined secondary chip breaking surface.
