    • This invention is a process and apparatus for the manufacture of coated materials employing the use of an abrupt pressure change to a solution containing the target material and a liquid carrier medium which helps to propagate the pressure change. The material is coated with an impermeable or semi-impermeable film through the use of abrupt pressure change. Coated materials are formed by applying an abrupt pressure change to a liquid medium in which the target material, which could be a fiber, and coating film are immersed. By controlling the intensity and pressure level of the abrupt pressure changes and time of exposure, the thickness and hardness of the resultant coating can be adjusted. The coated materials can be made with several coating layers to increase strength. The invention also includes a method and apparatus for making coated materials in a continuous process in a fraction of the time required by methods of the prior art, and with greater versatility in the coating process.

    • A method for repairing damaged metal surfaces. A marred painted surface, for example the painted sheet metal forming automobile or truck bodies, which have been damaged by scratching or chipping of the paint to expose metal, can be touched up so as to renew the continuous painted appearance and to prevent corrosion of the exposed metal by applying touch-up paint to the marred metal surface, and rubbing the touched-up surface and the immediately surrounding unmarred finished surface with a soft, flexible sheet material which has been wetted with a touch-up paint solvent composition, to remove the excess paint inadvertently spread over the old finish surrounding the scratch or chip. The flexible sheet material with the solvent is rubbed over the touched-up area only after the touch-up paint has partially set, generally from about 1 to about 15 minutes after application. The solvent composition comprises a paraffinic liquid solvent selected from the group of lower alkyl-substituted benzene and oxygenated aliphatic and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon compounds and halogen substituted such compounds.

    • Method and apparatus for printing plastic film such as polyvinyl chloride stretchable wrapping film including multi-colored printing apparatus (11), with multiple cylinders (26), supply roll apparatus (61), take-up roll apparatus (113), a transport web (23) for carrying the film through the printing cylinders (77) is adapted to apply an adhesive in a pattern in register with the multi-colored printing pattern: the adhesive printing cylinder (77) has a drier section (53) downstream thereof. The adhesive printing cylinder (77) preferably is located upstream of the multi-color printing cylinders (26); and downstream of such cylinders, immediately before the film take-up roll (113) is a chill roller (121) for cooling the film prior to its being rolled onto the take-up roll (113). The pressure of the take-up driver roll (113) is controlled by a fluid pressure cylinder (115) to prevent adhesion of adjacent film layers on the take-up roll (113).

    • In a plating process for constructing a nickel embedded abrading particle saw blade on a saw blade substrate, the step of plating abrading particles onto and within the supporting copper substrate is disclosed. The beveled edge of a circular aluminum saw blade blank (20) is first coated with a thin zinc layer (24). Thereafter, copper (26) and abrading particles (36) are plated followed by conventional abrading particle and nickel plating. Conventional material removal thereafter follows at the saw blade side adjacent the circular saw blade blank (20), saw blade edge (22), and copper layer (26). The final saw blade product produced has uniform cutting edges on both sides with less likelihood of producing edge fractures, chips, or cracks in silicon wafers during separation.

    • An automated trowelling system (10) for providing a smooth, even finish to one or both sides of a wall (12). The present system smooths wet surface materials such as concrete or plaster quickly and consistently with minimum manual intervention. Horizontal brackets (30, 32) on the wall (12) support a horizontally translating column (22) and an associated vertically reciprocating trowel (34). A first motor (28) propels the column (22) and trowel laterally along the wall (12), while a second motor (38) effects vertical motion. A forward scoop (42) removes excess wall finishing material ahead of the reciprocating trowel (34), and a nonreciprocating finish trowel (44) follows the reciprocating trowel (34) to provide enhanced finish to the wall (12). A processing unit enhances the ability of the system to operate with minimum manual intervention. Sensors provide input to the processing unit.
