    • A bed bug trap includes heat, carbon dioxide and/or semiochemicals (pheromones and/or kairomones), to attract and trap bed bugs. The trap may be combined with the appearance and/or function of another appliance, such as an air freshener. The release of semiochemicals may be combined with the release of air freshening compositions. The device preferably is powered, but not necessarily. The bed bug trap may provide one attraction mode, or two attraction modes, namely one which uses heat, carbon dioxide and/or kairomones to attact bed bugs seeking a meal, and the other which uses pheromones to attract bed bugs seeking a safe harbor, i.e. a hiding place. The two different modes may operating simultaneously in different areas, or the trap may be switchable between modes, for example via a timer, or in response to some trigger such as a light sensor. Alternatively, one mode may operate continuously, for example the mode in which bed bugs are attracted to a harboring location, while the other mode, for example the mode in which bed bugs are attracted to a feeding location, may be operated only intermittently. The bed bug trap may be combined with a wide variety of appliances, such as air fresheners, alarm clocks, clock radios, humidifiers, desk or table lamps, power bars, etc.

    • An insect trap for use in trapping and exterminating crawling insects including bed bugs. The trap includes a pit fall trap assembly with sidewalls defining a pit or well and a heat source positioned within the pit. The trap includes a controller assembly with a controller selectively operating the heat source, which includes a base plate provided at a bottom of the pit. In this way, the base plate provides the floor or lower surfaces of the pit upon which insects fall and also to which the insects are attracted by the thermal lure of the heat source. The inner surfaces preferably include a layer of anti-traction material (such as UHMW tape or the like) such that the insects cannot climb back out of the pit. The controller operates to alternate the heat source between a lure temperature mimicking a blood host and a higher temperature to exterminate trapped insects.

    • Method and apparatus for killing target pests using strategically designed moats. The moats are constructed of barrier material that is difficult for the target pests to traverse, material that is easy for the target pests to traverse, and killing material, which tends to kill the target pests after they have made adequate contact with it. These elements are strategically positioned so that target pests that are attracted to a bait travel along a long zigzag path parallel to the barrier material and, hence, a long zigzag path along killing material held by the material that is easy for the target pests to traverse and along any killing material contained in a strategically positioned furrow. Moat system embodiments that provide selective access to baits and/or killing material are disclosed. Several examples are provided demonstrating applications to bed bugs, and explanation is provided for how to apply the invention to other pests.
