    • Enhancements to a video anticopying process that causes an abnormally low amplitude video signal to be recorded on an illegal copy. The enhancements in one version introduce into the overscan portion of the television picture, just prior to the horizontal or vertical sync signals but in active video, a negative going waveform that appears to the television receiver or videotape recorder to be a sync signal, thereby causing an early horizontal or vertical retrace. One version provides (in the right overscan portion of the picture), a checker pattern of alternating gray and black areas which causes the TV set on which the illegal copy is played to horizontally retrace earlier than normal in selected lines with a consequential horizontal shift of the picture information on those lines. This substantially degrades picture viewability. In another version a gray pattern at the bottom overscan portion of the picture causes vertical picture instability. In another version selected horizontal sync signals are narrowed, causing irregular vertical retraces. Also provided is apparatus for removing or attenuating these enhancements from the video signal, to allow copying.

    • A method and apparatus to inhibit the piracy of motion pictures in theaters by taking advantage of the frame rate discrepancies between film (or digital) display and video camcorders. By alternating specific image display intervals and, shuttering cadences, or with digital video projectors commanding a similar modified display via the digital projector's blanking and display capabilities, so that the projected images occur in a random and/or phase shifted manner, objectionable distortions are produced in an illicitly captured video image, while being invisible to theatrical viewers. In addition, various serrated, slit, multi-quadrant or spotted patterns may be used on mechanical shutters, or simulated on digital displays, to further degrade the quality of illicitly captured video by pirates in theaters.

    • Novel systems and methods for preventing piracy of motion picture images by recording the images as they are displayed on a movie screen, using a camcorder as a recording device. Two alternative anti-piracy systems and methods are described. The first method is to vary the frame rate of the displayed motion picture images in a random fashion, thus preventing the camcorder from synchronizing its internal frame rate with that of the displayed motion picture image. The second method is to transmit pulsed energy with frequencies in the frequencies of visible light, such as red light in a manner with sufficient transmitted power or frequency to degrade the quality of the recorded image by the recording device. The result is significantly degraded quality of the recorded ima ges. The two embodiments can be used alone or in combination.

    • A method and projection system for distorting a recording of a plurality of projected frames is disclosed, comprising a high frame rate display configured to impose a modulation on the projected frames at a frequency that is above the critical fusion frequency of the human visual system, wherein the modulation is of one of shutter width relative to shutter spacing, brightness, frame period, and pseudo-rastering. The high frame rate display may be a tonal display. The projection system may further include hardware for producing low frame rate imagery; an input buffer operatively coupled to said hardware for receiving one of a serial bit stream or blocks of data so as to store at least a predetermined portion of a frame; and a sub-frame generator operatively coupled to said input buffer and to said high frame rate tonal display for applying mathematical modulation techniques to said at least a predetermined portion of a frame.
