    • The device comprises a chamber (3) having at least three ports (4, 5, 6) two of which can be closed off by valves (9, 10) carried by a main thermostatic element (7) housed partially in the chamber, one valve moving away from its seat when the other moves towards its own seat. A pipe (1) entering the chamber (3) via one of the two seats contains a thermostatic threshold-setting element (17) carrying a moveable compensator (21) provided with a moveable stop (16) for the main thermostatic element (7); the thermostatic setting element (17) has electrical heating means which can be connected to an electrical power supply that can be selectively activated and deactivated in order, when deactivated, to decrease the distance between the stop (16) and the seat (14) in the pipe and thus the temperature for which this seat is released. The device can be used in the cooling circuits of internal combustion engines.

    • A fail-safe thermostat includes a stationary valve member configured to be positioned between conduit components of the engine cooling system, a movable valve member for engaging the valve seat to block fluid flow into the conduit through the opening, an operating spring for biasing the movable valve member to a closed position against the valve seat of the stationary valve member, and a thermally responsive actuator for moving the movable valve member to an open position away from a valve seat when the ambient temperature exceeds a first predetermined temperature to permit fluid flow into the conduit. The apparatus further includes a bimetallic frame member coupled the stationary valve member. The frame member is configured to compress and hold the operating spring in engagement with the movable valve member. The frame member is configured to disengage itself from the stationary valve member when the ambient temperature exceeds a second predetermined temperature and upon failure of the movable valve member to move to its the open position.

    • A valve controls mutual communication between first, second, and third spaces, and includes a first valve seat controlled by a first valve element communicating between the first space and the second space, and a second valve seat controlled by a second valve element communicating between the first space and the third space. The first valve member is biased towards the first valve seat, and the second valve member is biased away from the second valve seat with less biasing force. A temperature sensitive actuator includes first and second actuator members and is supported between the first actuator member bearing on the first valve element and the second actuator member bearing on the second valve element. This actuator, with rise in the temperature of the fluid generally around it, moves the first and second actuator members with respect to one another so as to exert by the first actuator member a force on the first valve member which urges it away from the first valve seat, and so as to exert by the second actuator member an equal force on the second valve member which urges it towards the second valve seat. Thus communication between the first and second spaces is definitely interrupted, before communication commences to be established between the first and third spaces.
