    • An assembly is provided comprising a spring break protection mechanism and a spring plug for connecting a balancing spring of a sectional door system to the spring break protection mechanism. The mechanism comprises a base plate with a circular opening for receiving a balancing axle. A ratchet wheel is rotatably arranged at a first side of said base plate to cooperate with the balancing axle. A pawl is pivotably connected to the base plate. Attached to said pawl is an extension extending from the pawl to beyond a second side of the base plate. The base plate and the spring plug are arranged for bayonet mount interaction wherein if the spring plug is placed against the second side of the base plate and then rotated for bayonet connection, part of the spring plug pushes the extension so as to force the pawl in the first position. If the spring plug is then rotated in an opposite direction, the pawl moves into the second position, to block the ratchet wheel so as to avoid rotation of the balancing axle.

    • A braking device configured for use with the counterbalancing system of a garage door. The brake device includes a support bracket, a ratchet wheel, a pawl arm, and a biasing spring. The support bracket is rigidly connected to a fixed structure and has a guiding slot. The ratchet wheel is securely mounted about the overhead shaft of the counterbalancing system and has at least one notch. The pawl arm has first and second ends, the first end of the pawl arm being pivotally connected to the support bracket and the second end of the pawl arm cooperating with the guiding slot and being movable with respect to the support bracket along said guiding slot. The first and second ends of the pawl arm are further connected to flanges of a plug on either side of the overhead shaft. The biasing spring is operatively connected between the support bracket and the pawl arm so as to exert a biasing force for biasing the pawl arm towards the ratchet wheel. The pawl arm is devised so that, an element thereof is adjacent to the ratchet wheel, said element being shaped and sized to be removably insertable into at least one notch of the ratchet wheel so as to block rotation of the ratchet wheel, and thus block rotation of the overhead shaft, in the event of a failure of the counterbalancing system of the door. The brake device further includes a shear pin operatively connectable between the support bracket and the pawl arm for maintaining said pawl arm, prior to installation of the brake device onto the counterbalancing system, in an intermediate configuration between the first and second configurations. The shear pin is made of a specific material being breakable when the pawl arm is rotated with respect to the support bracket when the torsional force of the torsional spring transmitted to said pawl arm via the plus has reached a predetermined value, ensuring namely that a predetermined minimal amount of load is present is said torsional spring for counterbalancing purposes.

    • A counterbalance system for an upward acting door includes a cable drum support shaft and a torsion spring drive mechanism mounted adjacent one or both sides of the door and drivably connected to the drum support shaft. The spring drive mechanism includes a torsion coil spring mounted on a frame and connected to a vertically oriented shaft which, in turn, is connected to an output shaft by way of a bevel gear drive. A spring winder device is connected to one end of the spring and to the frame. Indicia on the spring is viewable through a window on the mechanism frame for indicating the number of revolutions imposed on the spring to set a predetermined counterbalance torque.

A lock-on side bearing bracket bears up a spring mechanism on a garage door. This side bearing bracket includes a hook and a perpendicular tab to prevent the spring mechanism from dangerously releasing its energy when parts supporting the spring mechanism are removed or fail. A lock-on bottom roller bracket having a bottom bearing plate and a safety hook similarly prevents a potential, dangerous release of energy when the garage door lift cable is in tension. A safety latch with a latch bar and a latch cover acts as a lock for the garage door. The use of multiple safety features makes the garage door systems of the present invention particularly safe to operate and maintain.
