    • The invention relates to a method and a device for welding a sheet metal combination (4) by means of a resistance welding system (1), by which a welding current (i(t)) is supplied from a current source having a transformer (6) by means of an activated main circuit to electrodes (3) at a welding location in order to weld the sheet metal combination and the welding location is heated by means of at least one secondary circuit (10) connected to the main circuit according to a monitored total resistance (Rg) of the sheet metal combination (4) at the welding location in order to reduce the total resistance (Rg). In order to enable the welding of sheet metal combinations (4) regardless of the contact resistances thereof, the at least one secondary circuit (10) contains at least one source (11) and at least one control unit (9), and the voltage on the secondary side of the transformer (6) is controlled using the at least one control unit (9) by means of the at least one source (11) of the at least one secondary circuit (10) according to the total resistance (Rg), and the main circuit is activated for the welding at least upon a threshold for the total resistance (Rg) being reached.
