    • A saw chain sharpener for sharpening the left hand and right hand cutting teeth and the rakers of a saw chain while the chain is mounted in situ on a saw bar. The apparatus includes a base, a saw bar clamp mounted on the base for clamping a saw bar in a substantially vertical position. A grinding assembly including an electric motor and a grinding wheel is mounted respectively on first or second grinding assembly mounting posts. The mounting posts are secured on opposite sides of the saw bar clamp. The apparatus also includes an indexing device mounted on the bar clamp and which is spaced from the grinding surface of the grinding wheel when the grinding wheel is pivoted into the grinding position for selective supporting engagement with the rear edges of the saw chain cutting links. The saw chain can therefore move forwardly but not rearwardly when the indexing tooth is in position. The indexing device is adjustable to determine the lengths to which the cutting teeth are to be ground.

    • An upstanding support is provided and a rotary grinding head is journaled from the upper end of the support for rotation about a vertical axis. A horizontally disposed support arm is pivotally mounted from the support at one end portion for swinging about a vertical axis and the other free end portion of the support arm has a grooved support wheel journaled therefrom for rotation about a horizontal axis extending transversely of the support arm. The grooved support wheel may have a saw chain trained thereover and the grooved support wheel, during oscillation of the support arm, is swingable into registry with diametrically opposite side portions of the rotary grinding head. Also, a chain tooth engaging and positioning member is supported from each of the opposite side portions of the support arm adjacent the grooved support wheel and swingable into and out of an operative position. When one side of the support arm is swung toward registry with one side of the rotary grinding head the positioning member on that side of the support arm is swung to the inoperative position and the positioning member on the opposite side of the support arm is utilized to engage and properly position a chain tooth on the upper periphery of the grooved support wheel for movement of that tooth toward engagement with the rotary grinding head.

An elongated finger is provided and pivotally mounted at one end to the other end of the arm for limited angular displacement of the finger relative to the arm about an axis at least closely adjacent and generally paralleling a plane containing the groove and paralleling the direction in which the groove opens. The finger is displaceable relative to the arm between positions slightly oppositely inclined relative to the aforementioned plane.

    • A portable saw chain sharpener which permits sharpening of the cutter elements of the saw chain without removal of the saw chain from the saw bar. A frame of the sharpener may be attached to the bar of a chain saw by means of a clamp which is adjustable to properly locate the sharpener with respect to chain saw bars of different thicknesses. A motor-driven rotating abrasive disc is adjustably mounted on a portion of the sharpener which is movable with respect to the frame between positions of engagement and non-engagement with saw chain cutter elements. Adjusting screws are provided to separately control bevel depth and bevel angle and to control the position of each individual cutter during sharpening thereof. A releaseable clamp permits a mounting plate to be rotated with respect to a baseplate to directly adjust abrasive wheel position for sharpening cutters at various hook and between positions for sharpening left-hand cutters and right-hand cutters. The sharpener may be operated by electric power provided by a portable battery pack.

    • A machine for grinding saw chain on a chain saw bar includes a stand mounting a saw bar clamp and a new support table offset laterally from the clamp at the end of a swing arm carried by the stand. The saw support and clamp pivot about coincident vertical axis which pass through the lowermost grinding edge of a grinding wheel having an inclined axis of rotation in a vertical plane passing through such pivot axes so that the saw and bar can be swung together from one grinding position to another for sharpening both left-hand and right-hand cutter links without changing the wheel or saw adjustment. An adjustable chain holddown pawl on the bar clamp positions each cutter link on the bar for grinding and stabilizes the saw chain on the bar while permitting forward movement of the chain along the bar to advance successive cutter links into grinding position. The grinding wheel pivots between a retracted position permitting forward movement of the chain on the bar and a grinding position in which its lowermost edge grinds a properly positioned cutter element on the saw bar. The axis of the grinding wheel is adjustable in a straight line in its vertical plane parallel to the wheel faces to compensate for wheel wear without requiring other adjustments of the machine or chain saw.
