    • The present invention is directed to a closure for a container. Among the embodiments provided herein, a cap for a container used on a water dispenser has a roof portion, a cylindrical skirt, and a well extending from the roof portion into the cap. The well has a wall structure (62c) terminating at a base structure (89) that has a shape defined as comprising an annular rim (90) connected to the wall structure and either a frusto-conical member (92) having an edge that terminates to a disk shaped member (94), or a dome convex member (96) depending from the annular rim and extending in a direction towards the roof portion. The cap may further include at least two frangible lines (89h) defined on the base structure with scored sections (220) at the ends defined by each frangible line. Alternatively, the cap may have a base structure that includes at least two sections, one of which is dominant (250) and overlaps or is coincident with an edge of the other subservient section (252), the two sections causing the base structure (89i) to be sufficiently sealed during non-use and being deformable when penetrated by a probe to separate and allow dispensing of liquid within the container.

    • Improved tamper evidencing container and closure structures of the present invention may prevent or signal unauthorized access to packaging that adds to the security and reliability of packaged contents. In one embodiment, a tamper-evidencing closure cooperates with a neck finish (37b) having multiple upward projecting structures (98) of variable configuration circumferentially positioned about an annular surface (67b). Alternatively, the external surface of a neck finish may have an inward taper (17c) or an inwardly concave surface resulting in a concavity (106) which is dimension and configured to increase hoop strength of the exterior surface. Further, the tamper-evidencing closure may include multiple vertical lines of weakness (102) extending upward from a lower edge (30b) of a lower skirt portion (26d) which when ruptured provide a clear indication of tampering. Still further, the tamper-evidencing closure may include upwardly extending extensions (122, 128) emanating from the top free edge (85) of a retaining rim (84) or from pleats joining an arcuate segment of the retaining rim (84g) to rest between an outer container projection (52f) and the inner wall of a closure skirt (17f).

    • A closure for a container having an opening includes a base cap and an overcap that form a sealed chamber adjacent the opening that is isolated from the contents of the container. The base cap includes an outer skirt having container-engaging structure, a cylindrical well, a frangible membrane connected to the well along an inclined line of weakness and by a hinge member. The hinge member includes a pocket extending downward adjacent lower and upper terminuses of the line of weakness. The overcap includes a body having gripping structure, an inner skirt received within and rotatably connected to the well, and a cutting member depending from a lower end of the inner skirt received within the pocket such that the cutting member extends below the upper terminus. The cutting member severs the line of weakness upon substantial rotation of the overcap with respect to the base cap. A method of using the closure is also disclosed.
