    • Selectively printing full and fractional sized images with a donor ribbon. A first print order and indicia are printed while the donor ribbon is advanced through the printer. Printing is performed using donor material on a first fraction of the patch set when the print order requests a fractional sized image, or on a full patch when the print order requests a full sized image. When a second print order requests a fractional sized image, a determination is made whether the second fraction of the patch set is available for printing. An image based upon the second print order is printed using donor material from the second fraction of the patch set when it is available, or the donor ribbon is advanced to the next patch set when it is determined that the second fraction of the patch set is not available.

    • A printer that applies donor material from donor patches on a donor web to a receiver medium using a thermal printhead that generates heat and a method for operating such a printer are provided. The method comprises the steps of: receiving a print order requesting the printing of a quantity of images; determining a temperature of the printhead; printing a designated number of the quantity of the images in a sequence; determining a length of time of a programmed delay; delaying the printing for the determined length of time of the programmed delay; and printing remaining images from the quantity of images. The length of each programmed delay is determined by using the temperature of the printhead and a time rate of cooling of the printhead and, is determined in a manner that provides a sufficient cooling time to prevent the printhead from reaching a maximum printhead temperature during printing.

    • A method and apparatus of thermally printing an image on a receiver by (a) printing a first sub-image on a first region of the receiver with a first dye-donor patch of the first color and (b) printing a second sub-image on a second region of the receiver with a second dye-donor patch of the first color, wherein the first and second regions of the receiver have a partial overlap region. The first and second sub-images form the image which is longer in length than either of the first and second dye-donor patches. Pixels in the overlap region are printed with varying gray levels during both of steps (a) and (b) and pixel locations in the overlap region are printed by overlapping a partial pixel printed during printing step (a) with another partial printed during printing step (b).

    • A cartridge system and method adapted to tension a dye ribbon associated therewith. The cartridge system is disposed in a printer that includes an enclosure. A first spool belonging to the cartridge system is disposed in the enclosure. The first spool has the dye ribbon wound thereabout. The dye ribbon has a leading end portion extending from the first spool. A second spool is associated with the first spool, the second spool having the leading end portion of the dye ribbon connected thereto. A cartridge body, which houses the first spool and the second spool, has a flexible portion movable from a first position thereof spaced-apart from the dye ribbon wound about the first spool to a second position thereof into engagement with the dye ribbon wound about the first spool. When the flexible portion moves to the second position thereof, it imposes a drag force acting on the dye ribbon in order to tension the dye ribbon as the drag force acts on the dye ribbon. Moreover, a biasing member engages the flexible portion of the cartridge body for biasing the flexible portion, so that the flexible portion moves from the first position thereof to the second position thereof as the flexible portion is biased.

    • A printer uses a rotating platen to transport a sheet of print media receiver across a print head. The receiver is held to the platen with a positive receiver locking clamp at the beginning of a print cycle. The clamp is released prior to the completion of formation of an image on the receiver so that the receiver can be quickly removed from the platen. This reduces the print cycle time of the printer. The clamp is configured and operated such that the speed of the moving receiver is not changed when the clamp is released. The clamp configuration and operation permit the printing of high-resolution images without any discernible distortions caused by the release of the clamp during the image formation.

    • Thermal printers and methods for operating thermal printers are provided. In one method, a sequence of thermal print head control signals is generated that is adapted to cause an array of thermal elements to cause the donor material to transfer from a donor ribbon in a manner that is modulated in accordance with image data and attenuated in accordance with an attenuation pattern. A receiver medium is urged through the printing nip while the thermal print head control signals are transmitted to the thermal print head to cause the donor material to transfer from the donor web in an image modulated pattern having a longitudinal length that is larger than a longitudinal length of the receiver medium. The attenuation pattern provides a relatively high level of attenuation at a portion of the printing wherein there is greater risk that the receiver medium will not be within the printing nip.
