    • A polishing apparatus for polishing an object to be polished at a high flatness includes at least one plate with at least one object to be polished secured at an underside thereof, a head section surrounding the plate with a predetermined gap therebetween, a pressure applying device for applying a pressing force to the top of the plate, and a holding device for holding the plate in the plane of the polishing movement of the object to be polished. The pressure applying device and the holding device are both disposed in an inner space of the head section, the latter being movable perpendicular to the plane of the polishing movement. The attaching position of the holding device on the outer surface of the plate is set substantially at the same height as or at a position lower than the attaching position of the holding device on the inner surface of the head section. The intersecting point of the imaginary lines through the fixing positions of the holding device on the head section and those corresponding to them on the plate substantially lies on or at a position lower than the polishing surface of the object to be polished.

    • In a demodulator comprising an indicator (31) for indicating either stereo reception or monaural reception, an indicator circuit (30) is used to cancel a pilot signal included in a stereophonic signal and to produce a drive signal for driving the indicator. The indicator circuit comprises a negative feedback loop formed by an adder circuit (41), a phase detector (43), and a cancellation circuit (45). The cancellation circuit supplies the indicator and the adder circuit with the drive signal and a cancelling signal synchronized with and approximate to the pilot signal, respectively. The adder circuit substracts the cancelling signal from the pilot signal to deliver an intermediate signal to a multiplex decoder and to the cancellation circuit through the phase detector. The cancellation circuit comprises a wave generator for generating a pair of currents proportional to an amplitude of the pilot signal and a level adjusting circuit for converting one of the currents into the cancelling signal. The other current is converted into the drive signal.

    • An automatic telephone answering device employs a single magnetic tape and a single driving mechanism for driving the magnetic tape. Whenever an incoming call is received, a control circuit of the device sets the driving mechanism into a playback mode to play to the calling party an outgoing message recorded at the beginning of a track on the single magnetic tape. Then, if there have been no previously recorded incoming messages, the device records the calling party's incoming message on the same track after detecting the end of the recorded outgoing message. However, if any incoming messages have been recorded previously on the same track of the single magnetic tape, the tape is advanced at high speed to a point beyond the last of these previously recorded incoming messages. Then, the present incoming message is recorded. As soon as the incoming call is terminated and the recording of the incoming message is ended, the device is set into a rewind mode. When the beginning of the recorded outgoing message is detected, the driving mechanism is stopped, and the device is set into a standby mode to greet the next incoming call with the recorded outgoing message. In a preferred embodiment, a microcomputer is used to control the operation of the device. Also, in a preferred embodiment, a low-frequency (30 Hz) control signal is recorded with the outgoing message and with the incoming messages, and the recorded messages are separated by silent regions free of any recorded control signal.

    • For use in combination with a gain controllable amplifier for amplifying an input signal to produce an amplified signal with the gain controlled by a gain control signal, an automatic gain control circuit comprises a first section for shifting the level of the amplified signal by a first reference level and a second section for carrying out envelope detection of the amplified signal to produce an envelope detected signal of which the level is shifted by a second reference level different from the first reference level. A comparator compares the level-shifted signal with the envelope-detected signal to produce a pulse signal when the level of the latter signal traverses that of the former. The pulse signal is supplied to a smoothing circuit to produce a smoothed signal serving as the gain control signal.

    • A problem where a tool is deformed when a retaining ring is fitted on a shaft is solved. Plate members (2, 2a) positioned at at least one side of a full back surface of a retaining ring (W) are arranged at a holder (1) provided at the head of a tool body. A contact portion (3), a portion opposite an opening portion (Y) in the outer periphery of the retaining ring (W), is provided more backward than the heads of the plate members (2, 2a). A fall-off prevention structure (4) from which the retaining ring (W) can be easily detached is provided at the holder (1). There are sheltering spaces (5, 5a) arranged outside both side portions of the retaining ring (W) in its installed state. When the retaining ring (W) is installed to the holder (1), the retaining ring (W) does not fall off because of the fall-off prevention structure (4). Further, even when the retaining ring (W) is slightly opened by being pressed by the contact portion (3) when the ring is fitted on a shaft (S), both side portions do not come into contact with the holder (1) side and therefore the holder (1) is not deformed.
