    • A fixing device includes a fixing belt for fixing an unfixed toner image onto a recording medium, a planar heating member for heating the fixing belt, and a pressure roller. The heating member includes a ceramic heat generating element having a PTC characteristic, and a high-thermal-conductive heat diffusion member. The fixing belt is formed in an endless shape and is supported around, at least, the high-thermal-conductive heat diffusion member, thereby to be heated. The ceramic heat generating element comes into contact with the fixing belt over the full width thereof with the high-thermal-conductive heat diffusion member interposed therebetween. The high-thermal-conductive heat diffusion member comes into contact with the fixing belt over the full width thereof and diffuses heat generated by the heat generating element, in the traveling direction of the fixing belt.

    • In a fixing apparatus and an image forming apparatus of the present invention, an external heating section is provided that includes: an external heating belt; two heat rollers suspending the external heating belt and pressed against a fixing roller via the external heating belt; and a release/contact mechanism for causing the two heat rollers to separate from or contact with the fixing roller. With the heat rollers separated from the fixing roller by the release/contact mechanism, the external heating belt and the fixing roller are in contact with each other and the external heating belt follows rotation of the fixing roller. As a result, a fixing apparatus is provided that includes an external release/contact mechanism that can quickly operate in a small space and at low power without encouraging deterioration of the belt member. An image forming apparatus provided with such a fixing apparatus is also provided.

    • A planar heat-generating body 42 of a fixing apparatus of the present invention includes (i) a resistive heat-generating body 43a containing small heat-generating bodies electrically connected in parallel and aligned in a direction perpendicular to a direction in which a fixing belt 32 moves and (ii) a PTC element and a corresponding small heat-generating body being provided to be connected in series with a power source 36, the PTC element having a resistance value increasing at a predetermined temperature or higher. The PTC element 37 and the small heat-generating body are provided in an area corresponding to a non-sheet passing area of the fixing belt 32, the non-sheet passing area being an area where a smallest-size sheet does not pass, the smallest-size sheet being smallest among sheets that the fixing apparatus deals with. This allows for prevention of a temperature increase in the non-sheet passing area with a simple arrangement.

    • The present invention is made to provide a pretransfer charging device, which allows (i) reduction of generation of discharge products such as ozone and nitroxide, (ii) excellent uniform charging, (iii) continuous stable charging for a long period of time, and (iv) restraint of distortion of a toner image. The pretransfer charging device includes (i) ion generation needles each provided face to face with an image carrier such as a photoconductor drum or an intermediating transfer belt, and (ii) a high-voltage power supply for applying a negative voltage to each of the ion generation needles. The voltage to be applied from the high-voltage power supply is not less than an ion production threshold voltage but is less than a corona discharge threshold voltage. With this, no corona discharge occurs but negative ions can be generated. This makes it possible to solve various problems caused due to the corona discharge.
