    • A high-ortho phenolic novolac resin having excellent curability, heat stability and flowability can be produced safely at low cost by a process which comprises reacting a phenol and an aldehyde at a temperature of more than 100.degree. C. with (A) a catalyst effective for the addition reaction selected from the salts of divalent metals in combination with (B) a catalyst effective for the condensation reaction, or comprises reacting a phenol and an aldehyde under reflux in the presence of the catalyst (A), adding an acid to adjust the pH to 1-5, removing water under reduced pressure and then subjecting the product to reaction at a temperature of more than 100.degree. C. This process enables the addition reaction and the condensation reaction to proceed with a good balance, can solve problems arising in the prior process such as gelation, low yield and the like, and can produce a high-ortho type phenolic novolac resin safely at low cost. Accordingly, this process is quite advantageous in industry.

    • A transfer apparatus is provided of the type in which a toner image formed on a photosensitive member is transferred onto a transfer or copy sheet. The apparatus is used in a copying machine of a so-called delivery type in which the sheet is conveyed using a sheet gripper. During the transfer of a toner image, the appartus applies a corona discharge to the rear side of the sheet which is of the opposite polarity from that of the toner image. The apparatus comprises a diaphragm member for restricting an opening of a transfer charger and disposed between the transfer charger and the photosensitive member, the diaphragm member being movable away from the photosensitive member as the sheet gripper passes between the transfer charger and the photosensitive member.

    • A distal end of an inserted pole makes contact with a bottom surface or tapering surface of a portion corresponding to a bottom of an insertion hole. A lever rotates about a pivot shaft, and a pressing surface facing from a recessed portion formed in the insertion hole presses a side surface portion of the pole. The pole pressed by the pressing surface is mainly received by ridge portions, particularly the ridge portions positioned on the opposite side with a central axis therebetween in relation to the pressing surface. The ridge portions are positioned on both sides of the pole with the cross section along the line A-A therebetween as viewed in the axial direction. As the lever is rotatably operated in the tightening direction, the pressing position gradually approaches the central axis, thereby increasing the pressing force.
