    • A ringing area detector classifies the input image into two regions: a mosquito noise region (i.e. filtering region) and a non-mosquito noise region (i.e. non-filtering region), and uses this classification information to adaptively remove the mosquito noise in a mosquito noise reduction system. The mosquito noise reduction system includes a ringing area detector, a local noise power estimator, a smoothing filter, and a mixer. The ringing area detector includes an edge detector, a near edge detector, a texture detector, and a filtering region decision block. The ringing detection block detects the ringing area where the smoothing filter is to be applied. The local noise power estimator controls the filter strength of the smoothing filter. The smoothing filter smoothes the input image. The mixer mixes the smoothed image and the original image properly based on the region information from the ringing area detection block.

    • The present invention relates to a method for adjusting the saturation levels of the pixels of a time varying image being represented by RGB color sample vectors {right arrow over (C)} in an RGB color system. The method does not require the RGB color sample vectors {right arrow over (C)} to be converted into YUV samples in order to subsequently perform saturation adjustment. The method includes steps of: decomposing an RGB color sample vector {right arrow over (C)} into a white vector {right arrow over (w)} and a color tone vector {right arrow over (C)}T; obtaining a saturation adjusted color tone vector {right arrow over (CTo)} by multiplying the color tone vector {right arrow over (C)}T by a saturation adjustment parameter; obtaining a saturation adjusted RGB color sample vector {right arrow over (C)}o by adding the white vector {right arrow over (w)} and the saturation adjusted color tone vector {right arrow over (CTo)}; and using the saturation adjusted RGB color sample vector {right arrow over (C)}o to represent a color pixel of an output image.

    • A system and method that detect the location as well as the luminance transition range of slant image edge in a digital image. The variance value for the pixels inside a window in the image is calculated. Based on the variance value, a current pixel can be classified as being in an edge region or in a non-edge region. If the current pixel is in a non-edge region, no further checking is needed, otherwise binary pattern data is generated from the pixels inside the window. Then it is determined whether the current pixel is a center pixel in a luminance transition range of a slant edge based on the binary pattern data at the current pixel location and its neighboring binary pattern data. It is determined if the current pixel is the center pixel in a luminance transition range of a e.g. ±45° direction edge. If it is, then no further processing is needed at the current pixel location and the luminance transition range is considered as 3 pixels wide. Otherwise, based on the neighboring binary pattern data, another checking process is performed to determine whether the current pixel is a center pixel in a luminance transition range other than a ±45° slant edge. If the current pixel is considered as a center pixel in a luminance transition range other than a ±45° slant edge, then the length of the luminance transition range of the slant edge is determined by checking more binary pattern data inside the window.

    • A motion decision value provides a dependable estimate whether motion occurs in a given region of a video image in an interlaced video sequence. The motion detection is particularly applicable in the conversion from interlaced video to progressive video. An input first is fed to an absolute value former which computes a frame difference signal from a difference between the first field and the second field in one frame. A point-wise motion detection in the frame difference signal is then followed by a region-wise motion detection that combines the point-wise motion detection signal with an adjacent point-wise motion detection signal delayed by one field. The motion decision value is then computed from the region-wise motion detection signal and output for further processing in the video signal processing system, such as for choosing whether the spatially interpolated video signal value or the temporally interpolated video signal value should be used for the output.
