摘要： A method and apparatus are disclosed for cooperating with a first software program to perform a supplemental search over the Internet or another public network. A supplemental search is performed in the background to obtain desired information, while the user continues the primary task of creating, for example, a document. The user does not have to divert his or her attention from the primary task of creating the document to manually initiate a search. An illustrative word processing application program spawns a background thread in a multithreaded environment to perform the supplemental search using a browser, while the word processing application program maintains continuous control until the search results are obtained and viewed by the user. A supplemental search can be performed on a given topic (i) when requested by a user, or (ii) automatically, if a predefined condition, such as the occurrence of an apparently improper data element that fails to satisfy the requirements of a spelling or grammar database, is detected in a document of an application program. Thus, the invention can be configured to perform Internet-based spelling or grammar checking and automatically detect the adoption of new words or phrases and changes in acceptable grammar usage. In addition, the word processing application program automatically determines if a document being created corresponds to one or more predefined categories. If a document being created corresponds to a predefined category, the document can optionally be provided to an expert associated with said identified category for review.

Another example of an offer to provide a benefit to the account holder in exchange for a commitment by the account holder to an obligation. Such an offer may be provided by, for example, a merchant different than the merchant at which the check is being provided as payment for a transaction. In one or more embodiments, the offer or an indication of the offer may be printed on the check or handwritten on the check.

It then determines, for the product, a price increment (700), a predetermined price (800), and a demand threshold, that are defined by data stored in at least one data table. A rate of units of the product that are sold are determined. The rate is compared with the demand threshold. Based on the comparison of the rate with the demand data, it is determined whether the new price should be greater than or less than the current price (730). The new price is set to the predetermined price if the new price should be greater than the current price (730). If the new price should be less than the current price (730), a price increment (730) amount is subtracted from the current price (730) to yield the new price. The determined new price is displayed.

摘要： Systems and methods are disclosed whereby credit and debit card transactions are processed at a merchant point-of-sale terminal in a manner that provides customers the opportunity to receive one or more charge enhancement offers which are presented to the customer on a printed record of charge. The charge enhancement offers may indicate either a reduction or an increase in the original purchase total. In a first embodiment, a customer may receive a discount toward a purchase total in exchange for supplying feedback to a merchant in the form of a survey or questionnaire presented on the record of charge. In a second embodiment, the customer is provided the opportunity to receive a discount toward a purchase total by enlisting a third-party service or to purchase a third-party product by completing a section provided on the record of charge. In a third embodiment, the customer may select from at least one additional charge displayed on a record of charge to be added to a transaction total. Such additional charges may represent, for example, a gratuity for a merchant service. In each embodiment, the reduction or increase of original purchase total is provided by a clearinghouse or issuing bank that processes the credit or debit card transaction and confirms the cardholder's acceptance of the charge enhancement offer following completion of the transaction at the point-of-sale terminal.

摘要： According to an embodiment, an allocation of inventory for a vending machine (e.g., a mix or set of types of products and respective quantities of products to be loaded into a snack or beverage vending machine) is determined. In an embodiment, a computer or other computing device may be configured to (i) identify one or more vending machine products (e.g., from a universe of available products), (ii) determine an inventory allocation based on inventory management data associated with the products (e.g., data regarding the profitability of one or more particular products), and (iii) output an inventory allocation recommendation indicating an inventory allocation (e.g., a chart instructing an agent how to stock a particular vending machine). In various embodiments, inventory management data may comprise such criteria as slotting requirements, sales rates (e.g., the number of units of a particular product type sold per day), profitability (e.g., the retail price of a unit of a particular product type minus the unit cost of the product; the profit margin of a product type multiplied by a sales rate), outstanding product "subscription" data, seasonality considerations, weather considerations, product "tenure," product mix (i.e., variety) considerations, expiration data, "soft demand" data (e.g., customers who have indicated a prospective willingness to purchase a product if stocked), and the like.
