    • A mobile wireless device for use in a wireless network, wherein the wireless network includes regular access points and border access points. The border access points are those access points situated at the edge of the campus or other physical facility associated with the wireless network and they define the edge of the coverage area of the wireless network. The mobile wireless device predicts a possible drop of an active service due to loss of coverage by recognizing when it has connected with a border access point. A warning is output to the user of the mobile wireless device. The mobile wireless device may further recognize if it is located on the exterior side of the border access point away from the interior of the wireless network.

    • In one illustrative example, a technique for use in operating a wireless access point (AP) for serving as a handoff indication mechanism in a first wireless network is described. The handoff indication mechanism is configured to communicate handoff indications in response to mobile devices leaving coverage of the first wireless network, via an RF coverage region of the AP, for mobile device handoff to a second wireless network. The AP is provided in an ingress or egress region of the first wireless network, where it receives RF signals from one or more communication devices and determines and sets wireless transceiver parameters for adjusting boundaries of its RF coverage region. The AP also operates with the adjusted RF coverage region to serve as part of the handoff indication mechanism in the first wireless network, so that the handoff indications are communicated in response to the mobile devices leaving coverage of the first wireless network, via the adjusted RF coverage region, for mobile device handoff to the second wireless network.

    • Methods and apparatus for use in controlling the loading of wireless access points (APs) in a wireless local area network (WLAN) in support of legacy terminals are disclosed. The WLAN has at least a first AP and a second wireless AP adjacent the first wireless AP. An indication which indicates whether a loading of the second wireless AP is greater than a predetermined threshold is identified. When the indication indicates that the loading is greater than the predetermined threshold, a first nominal radio frequency (RF) transmission power of the first wireless AP is increased in order to increase a first RF coverage area of the first wireless AP. A second nominal RF transmission power of the second wireless AP is correspondingly reduced in order to reduce a second RF coverage area of the second wireless AP. In response, some of the mobile communication devices initially operating with the second wireless AP are switched to operate with the first wireless AP in order to reduce the loading of the second wireless AP. The techniques may be embodied in a centralized approach where transmission control equipment of the WLAN controls each wireless APs in this manner, or alternatively in a distributed non-centralized approach where each wireless AP acts independently and autonomously in the same or similar manner. Preferably, the techniques do not require the functional requirements of mobile devices to modified and therefore are suitable for use with existing legacy devices.

    • In one illustrative technique, a contention-free period indication is communicated by a wireless access point (AP) (e.g. a battery-powered AP) to a plurality of mobile communication devices within a beacon of a superframe. The contention-free period indication identifies a duration of a contention-free period within which the mobile devices must refrain from communicating through the AP. During each contention period subframe of each superframe, information is communicated to and/or from the mobile devices through a wireless transceiver of the AP. During each power conservation subframe of each superframe, the wireless transceiver is placed into a power conservation mode which is at least part of the contention-free period. Alternatively, or in combination with the wireless transceiver being placed in the power conservation mode, information for the mobile devices may be communicated to and/or from another AP within each relay subframe of each superframe which is at least part of the contention-free period. Advantageously, power consumption may be reduced in the AP and/or a single radio interface may be utilized in the AP for communications. The durations of the power conservation subframe and the other subframes may be variably adjusted to tradeoff power savings with a real-time capacity requirement of the AP.
