    • A liquid crystal display device includes light source sections 150, a light guide plate 130 guiding light of the light source sections from a side edge and including a light emitting surface, and a liquid crystal panel 200 including a lower polarizer 230 opposed to the light emitting surface.     • A planar light emitting element is capable of outputting light having high directivity in at least one direction. The planar light emitting element has a light guide plate and first and second low refractive index layers. Light incident on the light guide plate is totally reflected on the interface between the light guide plate and the second low refractive index layer, propagates in the light guide plate, and is output from the light guide plate to the first low refractive index layer through a light output opening section. When a refractive index of the first low refractive index layer is sufficiently smaller than a refractive index of the light guide plate, the light propagates in the light guide plate at a large angle with respect to a light output surface of the light guide plate. When the difference between the refractive indexes of the first and second low refractive index layers is small, a spreading angle of light output to the first low refractive index layer is small. The light having high directivity is reflected on a reflective mirror and output from the planar light emitting element.

    • Provided is a liquid crystal display device with a backlight including a light guide plate. The light guide plate includes, a reflective polarizing plate for transmitting a P-polarized component and reflecting an S-polarized component, a reflector for reflecting the S-polarized component reflected by the reflective polarizing plate, and a polarization converting member for converting the S-polarized component to a P-polarized component. The reflective polarizing plate and the reflector are tilted at an angle such that reflecting surfaces thereof are not perpendicular to four sides of the liquid crystal display panel and are disposed such that the S-polarized component contained in a main component of light emitted from the light sources is reflected by the reflector. This keeps small the size of the liquid crystal display device and still improves reuse efficiency of the light emitted from the light sources.

    • An object of the present invention is to realize an image display device for color display with high luminance and high contrast. In the present invention, a unit cell 111 is filled with electrophoresis ink including two kinds of particles different in chargeability and color being dispersed in transmissive solvent 107. Voltage is applied to an opposite electrode 103, a stacked lower electrode 104 and an upper electrode 105 and thereby electrically charged particles 108a and charged particles 108b are moved to a first opening 106a and a second opening 106b where an insulating layer 110 is provided on the lower electrode 104 and the upper electrode 105. Thus assemblage and diffusion state of two kinds of particles are controlled. Thereby, a unit cell 111 obtains four display colors. Since the lower electrode 104 can be made to be a reflecting layer covering the entire unit cell, it is possible to make the aperture ratio large and the reflection percentage large.
