    • PURPOSE:To improve NOX purification rate by raising and lowering the temperature of an NOX adsorption/discharge catalyst forcibly and repeatedly in a range where the NOX adsorption/discharge catalyst indicates catalyst activating temperature for forcible generation of the process of raising the temperature of the NOX adsorption/ discharge catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Both main and auxiliary NOX adsorption/discharge catalysts 10, 12 are disposed at both main and auxiliary exhaust gas passages 6, 8 in the exhaust gas passage 4 of an internal combustion engine 2, and both opening/closing valves 14, 16 are disposed upstream of those catalysts. Both the opening/closing valves 14, 16 are interlocked with each other to open and close them alternately. Namely, driving the valves are controlled by an electronic control unit 20 through an actuator 18 respectively based on the detected signals of a throttle opening degree sensor 22. Both the opening/closing valves 14, 16 are controlled in a temperature range where both the catalysts 10, 12 indicate catalyst activation temperature respectively to raise and lower the temperature of both the catalysts 10, 12 forcibly and repeatedly. It is thus possible to forcibly generate process of raising the temperature of both the catalysts 10, 12, thus improving an NOX purification rate.

    • PURPOSE:To suppress the generation of knocking by determining the correction value of the base compression ratio or the correction value of the compression ratio switching operation condition which is previously determined according to the operation condition according to the frequency of generation of knocking and controlling the compression ratio according to the correction value. CONSTITUTION:In an internal combustion engine 1 equipped with a compression ratio varying mechanism 2 which varies the compression ratio by varying the relative position of a piston for a connecting rod, a knocking detecting means 3 for detecting the generation of knocking is installed. The detection signal of the detecting means 3 is inputted into a correction value setting means 4, and the correction value of the base compression ratio or the correction value of the compression ratio switching operation condition which is previously determined according to the operation condition is determined according to the frequency of generation of knocking, and the correction value is memory-held in a memory holding means 5. The compression ratio is controlled by correcting the base compression ratio or the compression ratio switching operation condition by a compression ratio control means 6 according to the determined correction value.
