    • A system for watermarking and distributing material includes a data processing apparatus, which operates as a watermark encoder. The data processing apparatus is operable to process an original material item to form a reduced-bandwidth-version of the material item, marked with a code word from a predetermined set of code words. The data processing apparatus is operable to form an impaired version of the material item from which a marked representation of the original material item can be formed. The impaired version is formed by subtracting the reduced-bandwidth-version of the material item from a copy of the original material item. As such, the impaired version can be mass distributed, but a representation of the original material item cannot be formed without the reduced-bandwidth-version of the material item. By watermarking the reduced-bandwidth-versions, a representation of the material item, formed by combining one of the marked reduced-bandwidth-versions with the impaired material item, can be uniquely identified. However, only a low bandwidth part of the material item need be watermark encoded, which is more easily distributable to individual recipients than watermarked copies of the original material item.

    • Introducing test signals into at least first and second frequency bands of the image respectively, the test signals having a predetermined relationship with each other, which can be used to determine non-linear distortion. The apparatus comprises an image dividing processor operable to generate data representative of selected parts of the image, a transform detection processor operable to generate at least one parameter representative of a linear transformation applied to each of the parts of the image, and a non-linear transform processor operable to estimate parameters of a non-linear transformation representative of the non-linear distortion applied to the image from the linear transform parameters of at least two parts of the image. Non-linear distortion of an image can be evaluated in terms of the parameters of a linear transform determined for parts of the image from a detectable relative frequency change between the test signals recovered from the first and second bands of the image. The data processing apparatus provides a facility for determining parameters of a non-linear transform representative of the distortion applied to the image as a whole. The distortion is therefore evaluated by generating linear transform parameters for different parts of the image and then determining the non-linear transform parameters in accordance with a predetermined relationship with the linear transform parameters.

    • An encoding data processing apparatus generates a marked copy of a video material item by representing a payload data word 1 as a code word and embedding the code word into a copy of the video material item. The apparatus comprises a code word generator 10 including a pre-processor 8 and an encryption processor 14. The pre-processor is operable to divide the payload word into a plurality of parts, to form a plurality of initial values from the plurality of parts, each of the initial values being formed by adding parts of the payload data word to each initial value successively starting with the first part added to the first initial value, and adding the first and second to the second initial value so that each subsequent initial value includes all the parts of the payload data word of those of the previous initial values in addition to a new part of the payload data word. The encryption processor is operable to receive each of the initial values and to generate an encrypted data stream from each of the initial values using a payload encryption key. A combiner 22 is operable to combine the encrypted payload data word with the video material item. The encrypted data streams are thereby provided with improved orthogonality, which can assist in the detection of each of the encrypted data streams by correlation. Furthermore, the likelihood of an attacker being able to discover, alter or destroy the payload data word in the material item is reduced.

    • A watermarking system comprises an encoding data processor operable to generate at least one marked version of an original item of material by introducing one of a predetermined set of code words into a copy of the original material item. The encoding processor comprises a code word generator operable to form the code word by generating a plurality of code word coefficients, and an encoder operable to combine the code word coefficients with the material item, and an adaptation processor. The adaptation processor is operable to adapt the strength of the code word coefficients or the material item samples in accordance with a relative sensitivity of the material item samples to carry the code word coefficients. The strength of the watermark is therefore adapted in accordance with the sensitivity of the material item to carry watermark code word coefficients. As a result there is a reduced likelihood of an attacker identifying parts of the material item to which the water mark code word has been added. A likelihood of a successful attack is thereby reduced whilst maintaining a desired false negative detection probability. The watermarking system finds particular application in identifying a point of distribution of pirate copies of video material generated by capturing the watermarked image, using, for example, a camcorder in a cinema.

    • A watermarking system comprises an encoding data processor which generates at least one marked version of an original item of material by introducing one of a predetermined set of code words into a copy of the original material item. A detecting apparatus identifies at least one of a plurality of code words present in a marked version of a material item. The detecting apparatus comprises a registration processor which compares the samples of the marked material item with a copy of the original material item samples, and if a sample of the marked material item and the original material item differ by a comparison threshold, to replace the compared sample of the marked material item with the corresponding sample from the original material item. The data detecting processor may therefore detect watermark code words present offending copies of material items in which artefacts or other noise or degradation introduce samples into the offending material item which were not present in the original material item, with improved likelihood. The watermarking system finds particular application in identifying a point of distribution of pirate copies of video material generated by capturing the watermarked image, using, for example, a camcorder in a cinema.
