A chosen portion of the coded data is omitted during the transmission, and the transmission power level is, in contrast, chosen to be higher than the first transmission power level, such that the bit error probability is sufficiently low to allow the data to be reconstructed at the receiving station.

Contrary to prior art, no time invariable or fixed step size is used. An operating instruction is used instead which is related to a variabl e step size in transmission power regulation. Many variants of a single synchronization sequence and/or the order in which different synchronization sequences are transmitted can, for example, be used to indicate the configuration of the control channel. In this way the presence of a scalable control channel can be indicated already in the synchronization phase and with little additional effort.
