    • A headgear assembly for attachment to a respiratory mask assembly for delivering breathable gas to a patient for treatment of sleep disordered breathing, comprising: a lower strap portion (28) structured or arranged to in-use engage a rear portion of the patient’s neck and a cross bar strap (36) portion structured or arranged to in-use engage a portion of the occipital bone of the patient’s head, wherein the lower strap portion and the cross bar strap portion are connected by a first intermediate lower strap portion (34) and a second intermediate lower strap portion (34), and wherein the lower strap portion, the cross bar strap portion, the first intermediate lower strap portion and the second intermediate lower strap portion together define a first opening (54); and a first upper side strap portion (22) and a second upper side strap portion (22) that are each structured or arranged to extend above the patient’s corresponding ear and in-use to connect to the respiratory mask assembly, and a first lower side strap portion (24) and a second lower side strap portion (24) that are each structured or arranged to extend below the patient’s corresponding ear in-use to connect to the respiratory mask assembly; and an upper strap portion (26) structured or arranged to in-use engage a portion of each of the parietal bones of the patient’s head to prevent downward movement of the headgear assembly, wherein the upper strap portion and the cross bar strap portion are connected by a first intermediate upper strap portion and a second intermediate upper strap portion, wherein the upper strap portion, the cross bar strap portion, the first intermediate upper strap portion and the second intermediate upper strap portion together define a second opening, and wherein the first opening and the second opening are dimensioned such that the second opening is configured to accommodate a larger portion of the patient’s head in use than the first opening.
