    • Systems and methods for reducing wind pressure on wind turbine blades by selectively opening excessive wind portals in the turbine blades. One embodiment comprises a wind turbine system in which each of the turbine's blades has a portal therethrough that is opened or closed by a movable panel. Each panel is connected on one edge to the corresponding blade at the edge of the portal. Hook-and-loop material (Velcro) is attached to the edges of each portal and panel, allowing the panels to alternately open and then close the portals over a series of high wind events. Excessive wind pressure forces the panels to be released, opening the portals. Gravity or reversed wind direction with respect to the blade can be used to reseal the panels.

    • The invention is concerned with a textile spinning machine particularly a ring spinning machine, and is directed to the provision of a tension reliever between the delivery rollers and the yarn balloon, which has the effect of producing a tension differential between the yarn forming the balloon, and the yarn travelling from the delivery rollers to the tension reliever. In order to facilitate piecing-up of the yarn after a breakage, the tension reliever has a drive wharf and a capstan device which includes a yarn engaging capstan element, the capstan device permitting threading in a radial direction, and having a snap-in connection with the wharf, so that the capstan device can be completely detached from the drive wharf for a piecing-up operation. The tension reliever itself has a hollow body rotatable about an axis substantially coincident with the path of the yarn and a capstan element in the form of a rod having a yarn engaging section extending close to the axis of rotation and a hook portion at the distal end to prevent the yarn sliding off the yarn engaging section.

    • In dyeing keratinous fibres, such as wool, by impregnating the fibres with aqueous compositions containing dyes, followed by storage in the moist condition, a higher level of fixation, enabling heavier shades to be obtained with cheaper dyes, can be achieved by raising the temperature of the stored fibres by means of radio frequency heating. The storage temperature is preferably between 40.degree. and 80.degree. C., which usually requires about 0.05 kw hour/kg fibres. Acid, milling, chrome and premetallized dyes can be used, as well as reactive dyes and substantive optical brighteners. The fibres are cuttled into an insulated plastics material cart located between a pair of electrodes in an r.f. chamber. One electrode is fixed and the other is adjustable so that the r.f. load acting on the fibres may be set at a desired value.

    • An interfacial force microscope includes a differential-capacitance displacement sensor having a tip mounted on an oscillating member. The sensor generates displacement signals in response to oscillations of the member. A scanner is adjacent the sensor and supports a sample to be imaged. The scanner is actuable to move the sample relative to the sensor to bring the tip into intermittent contact with said sample as the member oscillates. A controller is in communication with the sensor and the scanner. The controller includes a sensor feedback circuit receiving the displacement signals and an AC setpoint signal. The AC setpoint signal has a frequency generally equal to the frequency at the peak of the displacement versus frequency curve of the sensor. The output of the sensor feedback circuit is applied to the sensor to oscillate the member. The controller also provides output to the scanner in response to the displacement signals to control the separation distance between the sensor and the sample.
