    • The invention relates to a sensor element (10) serving to detect a physical property of a gas to be measured, preferably to determine the concentration of oxygen or the temperature of an exhaust gas of a combustion engine. The sensor element (10) comprises a first solid-electrolyte film (21), a second solid-electrolyte film (22), and a diffusion barrier (41) that is placed in a layer plane between the first and second solid-electrolyte films (21, 22). A gas-impermeable or at least largely gas-impermeable covering layer (44) is provided on the diffusion barrier (41) in areas so that, in the areas in which the covering layer (44) is situated on the diffusion barrier (41), the diffusion of the gas to be measured into or out of the diffusion barrier (41) is at least largely prevented. The invention also relates to a method for producing a sensor element (10), whereby the sensor element (10) has a diffusion barrier (41) that is removed by a laser (81) in order to set the diffusion resistance of the diffusion barrier (41). The diffusion barrier (41) is placed between a first and a second solid-electrolyte film (21, 22). The invention also relates to another method with which a diffusion barrier (41) is placed between a first and a second solid-electrolyte film (21, 22). A covering layer (44) is placed on a side of the diffusion barrier (41) facing a gas to be measured located outside of the sensor element (10). This covering layer is gas-impermeable or at least largely gas-impermeable after a sintering process. The covering layer (44) is removed in order to set the diffusion resistance of the diffusion barrier (41).
