    • Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide methods and apparatuses for determining a packet number for a packet, based on a transmit packet number (TPN), transmitted with the packet, a locally maintained base packet number (BPN), and a value of the TPN relative to one or more edges of a locally-maintained receive window. An example method generally includes receiving a packet having a transmitted packet number (TPN), maintaining a base packet number (BPN), maintaining a receive window defined by a first edge a and a second edge b, determining a value i of the TPN relative to at least one of the first edge a or the second edge b of the receive window, and calculating a packet number (PN) for the packet based on the TPN, the BPN, and the determination.

    • Methods and apparatus for wireless communication in an IEEE 802.11 wireless communication system including legacy and high-efficiency wireless (HEW) devices are provided. In one aspect, a method for wireless communication in an IEEE 802.11 wireless communication system including legacy and high-efficiency wireless (HEW) devices includes determining a first time interval for communication according to a HEW protocol. The method further includes transmitting, according to a legacy protocol, a first communication at least partially protecting reception of communications during the first time interval. Another method includes receiving a first communication announcing a second communication. The method further includes determining a first time interval for communication according to a HEW protocol. The method further includes transmitting, according to a legacy protocol, the second communication for at least partially protecting reception of communications during the first time interval.

    • Systems, methods, and devices for communicating in a wireless network are provided. In one aspect, a non-zero portion of a node identifier may be used to generate a partial association identifier. If no portion of the node identifier can be determined to be non-zero, then a default value may be used for the partial association identifier. In some other aspects, the partial association identifier may be based on a random number. In some other aspects, a portion of a node identifier is evaluated to determine if it is zero. If the portion is non-zero, a partial association identifier is generated based on the portion. If the portion is zero, a partial association identifier is generated based on the portion.
